Microsoft Acquired Startup R2 Studios To Enhance Its Xbox Unit





In December, we reported that Apple, Microsoft and Google were potential buyers of home automation startup company R2 Studios. Today The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft has already acquired the company to strengthen its Xbox unit.

“The company, id8 Group R2 Studios Inc., was created by entrepreneur Blake Krikorian in May 2011. Mr. Krikorian will be joining the Redmond, Wash., software giant with a small team. As part of the deal, Microsoft also acquired some patents owned by the startup related to controlling electronic devices

The price of the deal couldn't be learned”.

Reportedly, R2 has been working to expand its business, that is focused on Android software for controlling Creston home automation system, to develop technology for displaying and distributing digital media to TV sets.

The report also notes that Microsoft has been actively working to turn its Xbox game platform into a digital media hub, making deals with Netflix, YouTube, HBO, Time Warner and Comcast for Web and on-demand video.
