Appstore: $1 billion market some day

In the month since Apple opened an online software clearinghouse called the App Store, users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in an interview at Apple's headquarters.

While many of the applications were free, Apple sold an average of $1 million a day in applications for a total of about $30 million in sales over the month, Mr. Jobs said.

If sales stay at the current pace, Apple stands to reap at least $360 million a year in new revenue from the App Store, Mr. Jobs said. "This thing's going to crest a half a billion, soon," he added. "Who knows, maybe it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time."

Apple is keeping only 30% of the proceeds from application sales -- about enough to cover expenses from credit-card transactions and other costs of running the online store -- while the programs' creators keep 70%.

WinPwn 2.0.0.4 with support of 2.0.1 firmware

PwnageTool 2.0.2 released just a day ago. And now WinPwn - iPhone jailbreaker and unlocker for windows is avaliable. The main new feature - it supports firmware 2.0.1.

Download 2.0.0.4: [Rapidshare.com] [Rapidshare.de]

Download firmwares: iPhone 1.1.4, 2.0, 2.0.1, iPhone 3G 2.0, 2.0.1

2.0.0.4 features:

  • Support for both 1.1.4, 2.0, 2.0.1
  • Root partition resize support
  • Installer support
  • Support for WinXP and Vista 32/64bit.

Notes are as usual:

  • You MUST do a full uninstall of winpwn before installing the new version
  • Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (from 7.7)
  • WinPwn uses 300MB of ram at peak due to the ipsw being extracted in memory
  • You must first click browse and load an IPSW to use WinPwn (i thought this was clear)
  • For 2.0 only the *5A347_Restore.ipsw files are valid. The 345 image will not work
  • If you see Failed to load image catalog/payload catalog, this is fine and won’t cause problems
  • If you already have service with AT&T do not activate or install Youtube Fix
  • As usual jailbreak for iPhone and iPhone 3G, unlock only for iPhone.
  • It is recommended to use at least 550mb partition size to accommodate a space issue that causes some folks errors such as “the ipsw failed to create”.

iPhone 2.1 Beta 3

iPhone OS 2.1 beta 3 is now available and is to be used for testing only. View the Pre-Installation Advisory for iPhone OS 2.1 beta 3, Readme, and Release Notes before installing the new versions of the iPhone OS and SDK. As a reminder, pre-release software is Confidential Information and is subject to the terms outlined in your Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions with Apple.

Again, there were 8 betas released for 2.0 between March and July. If Apple keeps this up, could we be looking at a September release for 2.1?

PwnageTool 2.0.2 is avaliable

PwnageTool 2.0.2 is out. It will support new firmware 2.0.1. It will jailbreak and unlock the old iPhone and jailbreak new iPhone 3G. Here are the download links:

Installer 4 Beta is included, it is added in any mode by default.  The main installer package management interface within PwnageTool isn’t enabled yet, and will report that installer.app isn’t available, but the actual Installer.app package is added as a default option in both modes.

The latest Cydia is also enabled by default. We recommend to use Cydia, not Installer.

pTerm - terminal application in AppStore

Newly arrived in the App Store is pTerm, an iPhone port of the PuTTY terminal emulator. It supports SSH and Telnet, among other things, and has a built-in Control key.

Eric Maland says that a 1.1 update is already on its way (it has been submitted to Apple and is awaiting approval). Unfortunately a handful of "major crashy bugs" (as Eric puts it) were discovered after the 1.0 release had been submitted.

Planned features for future releases include multiple simultaneous connections, custom sizes and colors, port forwarding and lots more.

And in the meantime, if you download and experience crashy behavior, Eric's message is: be patient. The fixes are done, but when they reach the Store is out of his hands.

pTerm is $4.99US in the US App Store

More screenshots and the list of features:

BigBoss Fantasy Pack winterboard theme

This is a WinterBoard theme (will not work on Summerboard or such). It features 100 fantasy wallpapers that rotate randomly every 15 seconds in a fading slide show. The awesome Winterboard app is required. I recommend you situate your icons onto other pages so that the desktop is relatively clear so you can benefit from these outstanding backgrounds. Avaliable... yes, via Cydia.

PwnageTool 2.0.2: bad news and good news

Bad news is that it is still not avaliable. DevTeam postponed their release. The good news is that version 2.0.2 will jailbreak 2.0.1 fimware (and unlock 2.0.1 for old iPhone) and have both Cydia and Installer 4 included. Stay tuned, the release will be in couple days.

iPhone + Dynolicious vs G-Tech Pro

There was a post about the coolest application for the iPhone: Car Performance Meter for IPhone.

Guys from Garage419 took Dynolicious out on the track and put it against the circuit's clock as well as the popular G-Tech Pro accelerometer-based dynometer, generally regarded as the industry standard for consumer performance metering (about $150). Surprisingly, at less than one tenth of the G-Tech Pro's retail price, Dynolicious was more accurate. Watch the video, forgive them for some commertial inside.

Apple patent: access iTunes library from anywhere

This patent is for accessing your entire iTunes library from anywhere—streamed to your iPhone or touch either via Wi-Fi or EDGE/3G. Basically, this future iTunes will sync the metadata for your whole library, and all the music and videos stored back on your computer ("virtual media items") will be totally integrated with the content actually on your device, so it'd be just like having your entire library on your phone.

Lotus notes for iPhone

IBM has unveiled a sneak peek of its new Lotus iNotes, a web app client for its Lotus Domino messaging server to bring email, calendar, and contacts to iPhone. The move fulfills rumors of customized iPhone support for Lotus Notes and demonstrates IBM's evolving interest in Apple within the enterprise.

Planned for delivery later this year, Lotus iNotes is built upon IBM's existing Lotus Domino Web Access infrastructure. The company's web site invites users to "bring the enterprise to your Apple iPhone" and says the software will deliver a "rich Apple iPhone user experience."

IBM published a series of screenshots of the tentative iNotes user interface, with the disclaimer that details are subject to change without notice.
