12.06.01-Camera

iFixit in conjunction with chip analysts ChipWorks tore down Samsung's new Galaxy S III smartphone, revealing that the device is sourcing a newer version of the same Sony-made camera used in the iPhone 4S.

ChipWorks confirmed on Friday that the backside-illuminated sensor found in Samsung's new Galaxy S III handset is being sourced from Sony and may be a newer version of the component used in Apple's iPhone 4S. While iFixit initially claimed that the sensor is "basically the same unit" used in the iPhone 4S, further examination of the chip revealed that it could be a slightly refreshed product. It seems that the camera's sensor is where the similarities between the two devices end, however, as Samsung uses its own memory and optics to complete the unit.

‘New’ iPad 2,4 Uses 32nm A5 Instead Of 45nm A5 Found In iPad 2

46025-1

Anand Tech reported on a detail in the new iPad 2 model that many have overlooked. When Apple launched the iPad 3 with Retina display and A5X chip, the company also released the iPad 2,4 model, which is almost identical to the iPad 2. Apple partner TSMC ramping up production of 28nm mobile chips

A5vsA5fromatv

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is expected to begin ramping up manufacturing of its 28-nanometer ARM processors.

TSMC is said to currently have a decent yield rate on its 28nm processes, but the company remains cautious on expansion, partially because the 28nm process is so new to the industry.

For example, Apple, one of the largest users of mobile processors, still relies on the 45nm manufacturing process for its latest-generation A5X ARM CPU found in the third-generation iPad. Apple is said to have viewed newer chips as a potential risk to their products, and have stuck with older processes to ensure availability and reliability.
