When Apple Inc. launched the iPhone 4 and its FaceTime video conference feature, it didn’t take long for adult-entertainment companies to develop video-sex chat services and start hiring workers through Craigslist.

We all remember how Steve Jobs talked about iPhone’s and iPad’s “freedom from porn” in email conversation. It looks like in real life FaceTime and new iPhone 4 will push forward porn industry.

The latest news from Apple – they plan to open a new retail store in Covent Garden (London) on Aug 7th. Nice location, isn’t it?

After using two iPhones 4 for six weeks Wall Mossberg finally reviewed the newest Apple’s handset.

So, one phone was obtained by Mossberg personally, while the second was provided by Apple. Walt found that iPhone 4 works better than iPhone 3GS in those areas where there is a “strong AT&T coverage”, but when it comes to weak coverage areas iPhone 3GS performs better, because it drops less calls and ‘no service’ status can be seen rarer. That became a reason for Mossberg to not recommend iPhone 4 with its limited AT&T data plans to people who “live, work or travel” in areas with poor reception signal.

Walt also found that the ‘death-grip’ issue is not a problem as it causes signal bars to fluctuate only and even to rise in some cases.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple started to investigate the compatibility problems of iOS4 and iPhone 3G. The company’s spokesman explained that such a decision was made because of numerous user reports, which reveal that after installing iOS4 on iPhone 3G the latter started to work more slowly, became overheated and its battery life had significantly decreased.

Some people are annoyed and disappointed because of the situation:

“This phone has gone from being a dream to constantly annoying me. Not a way to make friends. I would upgrade to an iPhone4, but I’m feeling pretty angry that Apple has forced my hand by making my 3G unusable”.

iOS4 version for iPhone 3G does not support multitasking and Bluetooth keyboards, which was disabled because of RAM requirements, according to Apple.

As you remember, few weeks ago iTunes Store was hacked and the top list of the Books category had been filled with a bunch of obscure books. That was achieved by a number of unauthorized charges that were made on accounts of several iTunes users, who eventually lost few hundred dollars. In turn Apple deleted developers who were found to use the fraudulent purchases.

These days Apple added new layer of security which now require every user to enter the security code of their credit card each time they register a new device or computer with their account, according to Different District blog. So if earlier malicious user just needed to guess a password for the account in order to receive and/or resell the acquired information to fraudulent buyers, after Apple’s security innovation it will require more efforts to do that.

MuscleNerd tweeted today that the recent redsn0w utility is able to jailbreak the iOS 4.1 beta2 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. This is useful for developers only, however good news for everyone.

Apple’s iPhone 4 handset is scheduled to hit Canadian stores this Friday. According to a recent report by CBC, Canadian customers will have the option of buying the phone unlocked, directly from Apple:

Unlocked iPhone 4 is not going to be cheap.

The expected prices are $637 (16GB) and $753 (32GB). Unlocked iPhone 3GS will be retailed at $530 (8GB). These prices are converted to US dollars.

Of course carries will be offering the smartphone at a discounted rates if customers buy a contract.

This Friday iPhone 4 will become available in 17 more countries, but South Korea will not be among them. Steve Jobs explained why:

“It’s going to take us a little longer to get government approval there”.

Korean government and people were discomfited by these words. According to The Wall Street journal, there is nothing to approve yet.

“The main communications regulator said last week that neither Apple nor KT [local iPhone carrier] had yet submitted the iPhone 4 for approval here”.

Eventually some newspapers accused Apple and its CEO of not being honest about the actual reasons of the delay. Eugene Securities analyst Kim Dong-jun is assured that the problem is not in KT corp., as they are very interested in shipping iPhone 4 to the country:

“We don’t know why it’s been delayed, but one thing is that KT sold the phone very well and now wants to have a better profit from selling iPhone 4. Negotiations over sufficient supply must also be going on.”

Anyway, Steve Park, who is an Apple’s spokesman in Korea, didn’t comment on the situation but said that the company is working on bringing iPhone to the country.

As you may know, this week Apple removed Chatroulette’s clone app iChatr from the AppStore because “users were exposing themselves” and it was a part of the company’s anti-porn stance.

Now we have information that DLP Mobile’s app, which simply represents an idea of mirror for the iPhone 4, was also rejected because the screenshots that were submitted along with it were considered as “obscene, pornographic, or defamatory” (referring to Section 3.318 from the iPhone Developer Program Licence Agreement).

Now you can see these screenshots above. The girl is Lyudmila Bouzinova, an America’s Next Top Model contestant, and both of the pictures are shoulders-up. Are they really obscene and how to correct such a “mistake”? Here what it was said in Apple’s letter to DLP Mobile:

“The application screenshots must meet the requirements for a 4+ rating (no objectionable material) since these images are visible on the App Store by all users even when purchasing is restricted by the application’s rating.”

Eventually, the story ended well – the company changed the screenshots and the app was finally approved.

Today Apple released a statement where it is said that white iPhones 4 will not available until late 2010.

“White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.”

Month ago Apple stated that the shipping of white iPhones delays due to manufacturing challenges. It remains unknown what those challenges are, but they are obviously very significant.

Yesterday LG Display’s Chief Executive Officer Kwon Young-Soo revealed that LG cannot currently produce enough iPad displays for Apple.

“Demand (from Apple) keeps growing and we can’t meet it all.”

It was also said that LG is going to increase the production of such displays but the demand will be met only presumably in the second quarter of 2011.

Even Apple didn’t expect the iPad will be so popular, according to its Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook. Last financial quarter there were 3,27 million iPads sold. But that will not slow sales down – this Monday Apple announced that since Friday the iPad will be available for sale in nine more countries.

It is interesting that while LG cannot meet the iPad display demand it had already invested over $500 million in producing its own mobile phones and tablets.

According to AppleInsider, Apple’s employee Jeff Williams has recently been promoted to right hand man of chief operation officer Tim Cook. That move was made to ensure that Apple products meet “the highest standards of quality” after it was revealed that iPhone 4 has significant problems with antenna, bluetooth and proximity sensor.

Before 2004 Jeff Williams was Apple’s head of worldwide procurement and managed company’s supply chain of the music player components.  Then he became a Vice President of Operations and played a significant role in worldwide launch of iPhone and iPod.

His work was so good that Apple awarded Williams several times. Since 2005 he was receiving different share grants every year, and in total cost they are worth now nearly $27,4 million (if take into account Wednesday’s closing price of Apple shares). AppleInsider also thinks that by this promoting Apple considers replacing Cook by Williams when Steve Jobs will step down and Cook will become Apple’s CEO.

On his new position Jeff Williams will focus on end-to-end supply chain management by leading a special team of people all over the world and on assuring product quality.

Earnings Increase 78 Percent

CUPERTINO, California—July 20, 2010—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 third quarter ended June 26, 2010. The Company posted record revenue of $15.7 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per diluted share. Apple sold 9.41 million iPods during the quarter, representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company began selling iPads during the quarter, with total sales of 3.27 million.

Yesterday new unknown Apple product was approved by Federal Communications Commission.  Page 45 in the FCC documents reveals that the product is named as a”Bluetooth Trackpad”. It’s a rectangular shaped device with a model number of A1339. It can connect to a MacBook via Bluetooth, but Wi-Fi or cellular data wireless radios were not mentioned in the filings.

The documents about this device were submitted to the FCC last October, the same time when its initial testing was completed.

Last year it was rumored that Apple prepares a multi-touch standalone trackpad style device which was called as the “Magic Trackpad”. Looks like this is finally it.

Last week organization Americans for Fair Patent Use filed a lawsuit in a U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Texas. Apple, Samsung Telecommunications America, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. are named as the defendants. The lawsuit says that these companies produce and/or sell falsely marked products with a patents that are expired or do not cover these marked products, with a purpose “to deceive the public about the patent coverage for their products.”

The document mentions iPod touch, iPod classic (5th and 6th gen), iPod nano (3rd and 4th gen) and iPhone, which reference to U.S. Patent Nos. 4,577,216, 4,631,603, 4,819,098, and 4,907,093. According to lawsuit, Apple started referencing those patents since March 6, 2007 after they had actually expired.

“Despite the fact that all of the ‘216, ‘603, ‘098 and ‘093 patents expired prior to the first sale in the United States of any Apple Product, Apple knowingly and intentionally marked the user manuals, user guides, or product information guides (or the equivalent) for these products at various times with the patent numbers of these patents. Apple knows that the ‘216, ‘603, ‘098 and ‘093 patents do not and never covered any of the Apple Products.”

The organization Americans For Fair Patent Use asked the court to fine the defendants $500 per every falsely marked product. Moreover, the plaintiff also wants the court to take steps to ensure that these companies will notify their customers of the situation and will not falsely market their products in the future.

Research in Motion’s Chief Executive Officers Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have released an official statement on the Apple’s latest press conference, where the company showed the antenna issue on BlackBerry 9700 to prove that such a problem a normal thing for every smartphone. Both of the directors were stunned that Apple mentioned RIM in order to justify their mistake:

“Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM’s customers don’t need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple.”

So yesterday Apple had a press conference in its campus in Cupertino to talk about iPhone 4 antenna issue. It was revealed that every new iPhone user will have an opportunity to order free case for his smartphone through Sept. 30. Because Apple cannot produce enough number of cases at the moment, it will source cases from other vendors and then give customers a choice so they would be able to pick the one they like.

Jobs said that the cases will be available for order on the Apple’s site in the end of the next week.

“Pick a case, zoom, we’ll send it off to you. That simple.”

Those who will remain unhappy after receiving free case will still have an opportunity to return their undamaged iPhone 4 within 30 days after purchase.

“No restocking fee or anything. We want to take care of everyone. We want every user to be happy.”

Customers who have already bought a third-party cases for their iPhones 4 will not be able to refund them.

This week Steve Jobs had been seen enjoying his vacation in Hawaii. According to Gawker.com, which in turn referred to some tipster, who actually saw Apple’s CEO, the latter had a lunch at Kona Village Resort with his family. The spy also heard that Jobs was explaining the positive uses of LCD to his kids, the subject which was described earlier in the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

Though nobody else did not confirm this information, the news are certainly entertaining.

In the latest episode of The View (ABC’s TV show) Whoopi Goldberg told about her experience of using iPhone 4, which eventually ended by its “murdering”. As she speaks about Apple products, it looks like her problems weren’t about antenna issues -- she just bought a faulty device (at least, as she said, she didn’t have any problems with her previous iPhone).

“The people couldn’t get a hold of me…my phone would ring and ring and ring to them, but wouldn’t do anything to me… My phone was bad; it wasn’t just that the antenna was bad, it was bad!”

Well, that’s not a lucky situation for Apple at all.

Yesterday Silicon Alley Insider reported that Palm had a chance to be acquired by Apple, but eventually HP’s bid was higher. Referring to an anonymous source that was familiar with the negotiations, author Dan Frommer wrote:

“Apple was mostly interested in Palm’s huge library of intellectual property and patents (450+ patents on file, another 400+ applications on file). And unlike some other bidders, Apple even seemed committed to funding Palm’s operations, perhaps to challenge RIM’s dominance in the keyboarded segment of the smartphone industry, our source says.”

It is reported that Google also wanted to purchase Palm to spite Apple, but the company didn’t know whether Apple was actually bidding for Palm, so no moves were made in that direction.

Eventually HP acquired Palm and now has plans to use its webOS in company’s future tablet devices that will compete with Apple’s iPad.

According to Wall Street Journal, Apple will not recall those 2 million iPhones 4 that have been already shipped worldwide.

The source, which is familiar with the matter, told that Jobs knew about possible antenna issues nearly a year ago, but he was so amazed by new design that “Apple went ahead with its development”. That person also confirmed that the problem was not discovered until now because the units that were tested by the company and its carrier partners were covered in different cases to obscure the design and some functions.

“Those test phones are specifically designed so the phone can’t be touched, which made it hard to catch the iPhone 4’s antenna problem”.

Moreover, carrier partners had limited time to test the new phone, not to mention that Apple equipped them with “fewer devices to test than other handset makers.”

Today Apple is going to hold a special press conference about iPhone 4, so there are all chances the true story about antenna issue will finally be revealed.

Today Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes released another article which reveals that the producing of next-gen iPad will be started in the last quarter of 2010. New tablet will have 7-inch and 5.6-inch OLED displays supplied by Compal Electronics. Both of these small (compared to the current 9.7-inch model) devices will “target the e-book reader market, separating them from the 9.7-inch model, which mainly targets multimedia entertainment”.

Choosing the OLED panels is explained by the assumption that its costs will be dropped soon, as LG display and Samsung Electronics are currently devoting resources into its development.


“With Apple’s brand image and high average selling price Apple should have no problem adopting OLED panels, which have higher price than standard panels, into its devices”.

Well-known research analyst at DigiTimes Mingchi Kuo in turn noted that OLED displays will not be supplied by Samsung as the company currently cannot even produce the enough quantity of such panels for its own handsets. Compal also won’t likely be an Apple supplier as its manufacturing gross margins are too small.  Kuo did not mention who may be a supplier of OLED screens.

This is a second time when DigiTimes rumors about adopting OLED display on the iPad.

Current version of 9.7-inch iPad has an LCD screen with IPS technology. It’s the most expensive component in the device with a price of 95$. The OLED screen of the same size would cost about $500, which is a price of iPad Wi-Fi 16 GB.
