Saurik describes the origins of Jailbreak and Unlock for the very first model of the iPhone. Jay explains that initially there were two important things to do with the iPhone 2G -- to use other carrier than AT&T and to install any application.

There is no official jailbreak utility for iOS 4.0.1. However you can still jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G. Just do the following:

• Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.5-b5 in our utilities page here.
• Download firmware images for iOS 4.0 here.
• Run RedSn0w and point it at the 4.0 IPSW. (Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.0.1). This will also hacktivate your iPhone3G at 4.0.1 if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes.
• Install ultrasn0w in Cydia (add repository http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com) if you need a carrier unlock (and in the USA, remember to turn off 3G mode in Settings→General→Network).

DevTeam updated iOS 4 jailbreak utility redsn0w to version 0.9.5b5-5. That should fix any APN or MMS issues that users were seeing. It’s safe to re-run it on an already jailbroken iPhone without restoring. Just deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that.

Supported devices are still only iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G (not MC)

This means, that all users with basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04 can use ultrasn0w 0.93.

There is no jailbreak for just released iOS4, so you need to wait a bit. Firmware 3.1.3 who need unlock can update ultrasn0w and use their iPhones with any carrier.

As you remember, recently we reported about new app that allows syncing your iDevices wirelessly. It’s called Wi-Fi sync and available in Cydia since Apple didn’t approved it. Recently it was updated to version 1.1 to support Windows. You can download it here. Its price is $9.99.

Last week Apple has released its iPhone Os 4.0 beta 4 and redsn0w is finally updated to support this as well as beta 1. New version of jailbreak is 0.9.5.b4 and it can be applied on iPhone 3G only(!).

Redsn0w 0.9.5.b4 is targeted at developers who make jailbroken apps, and will not work if you are already using blacksn0w, ultrasn0w or yellowsn0w.

iPhone Dev-Team warns:

“You should stay clear of this beta software if you rely on a carrier unlock.”

To use the jailbreak, follow the guide below:

1. Download redsn0w 0.9.5.b4 here. (Only Mac OS X version since app are developed on this OS).
2. Make sure you have already activated your iPhone 3G with iTunes and your own developer ID.
3. Launch the jailbreak.
4. Select your stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A274b_Restore.ipsw (beta4) or iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw (beta1) file that you used to update your firmware.
5. Choose “Install Cydia” and then click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the redsn0w.
6. When your iPhone 3G comes back up, you will notice Cydia has a blank white icon. It also has no sources so you should go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (make sure you are connected to the Internet before). When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.

For those who doesn’t like iTunes for its restrictions and lockdown on music and files a new solution has been delivered to the BigBoss repository and it’s called PwnTunes.

PwnTunes allows copying files from iPhone or iPod touch to PC just after plugging the sync cable. There is no tethering for only one PC, so you can use your device anywhere you want. Other features include:

• Music files are normally named after the original filenames on the PC and without gibberish encoding.
• Deleting songs and any other type of files directly via USB (iDevice works as USB device)
• Loading cover.jpg/folder.jpg from same folder as cover
• Album name is taken from folder’s name if no album ID3 tag found, artist name is taken from parent folder’s name if no artist ID3 tag found

The app currently is currently compatible only with Windows (XP/Vista/7), but the developers promise the Mac support to be delivered soon. The price is €9.99. No additional software on PC is required, you just need to launch Cydia on your jailbroken iDevice and install PwnTunes from Data Storage Section. When installed, connect you iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad via USB and the app will ask you to buy License or download it if you have already purchased one.

You may remember our post about “Wi-Fi Sync” app that allows you to sync your iPhone/iPod touch with iTunes via Wi-fi. Well, this week Apple rejected it. But its developer Greg Hughes submitted it to Cydia (an unauthorized source of different software for jailbroken iDevices), and now it is available there for $9.99.

Greg also told Engadget that he talked to Apple representative and he said the case was not about any violations.

“While he agreed that the app doesn’t technically break the rules, he said that it does encroach upon the boundaries of what they can and cannot allow on their store. He also cited security concerns.”

“Wi-Fi Sync” is currently available only for Mac users, but Hughes promises to release version for Windows.

The first release of Spirit had a bug that accidently could delete all of your photos from the device that was jailbroken. If you have a backup which you made before jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, here is a quick guide how to recover deleted photos.

1. Open Cydia and search for “OpenSSH” and then install it. Reboot your device.

2. Download and then install iPhone Backup Extractor.

• Windows 32-bit version
• Windows 64-bit version
• Mac OS X version

3. Run iPhone BackUp Extractor. Select your last backup (that was made before jailbreak)

4. Navigate to Media/Media and select DCIM folder. Click “Next” and program will save the files locally.

5. Download and then istall WinSCP for Windows or Cyberduck for Mac . Open it and enter the following data to login to your device.

WinSCP for Windows

• Hostname: The IP address of your device. (Settings –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>)
• Protocol: SCP
• User name: root
• Password: alpine

Cyberduck for Mac OS X

• Server: The IP address of your device. (Settings –> WiFi –> <Your Network Name>)
• Protocol: SFTP
• Username: root
• Password: alpine

6. Go to /User/Media directory and then copy over the DCIM folder.

7. Reboot your device.

After that you’ll have all your backuped photos back.

iPad USB Camera Connection Kit is much more useful as it seems. Max Sha, an experienced user, was able to access external hard drive with this kit. All you need is a jailbroken iPad, an external drive, a split-USB cable to give the drive some power and a terminal of some sort (f.e. MacBook) to mount the external storage. While it is a little unwieldy, it shows that Terabytes of external storage for iPad is possible.

Here is a complete step-by-step guide from Max Sha:

For starters, you will need to do the following:

1. Have an external hard drive formatted to either HFS or FAT32. NOTE: All data will be erased!

2. Perform the Spirit Jailbreak.

3. In Cydia, install iFile ($4.00 for full version, but there is also a free trial) and OpenSSH (free)

4. As well, install the “Nano” terminal text edit from Cydia.

5. For this particular example Max used GoodReader app for iPad ($0.99).

Now you can begin the process of mounting your hard drive. You will need external power for the drive. If you have an external drive with power (one that has a USB port and an external power supply) you won’t need to worry about this. If you have external drive with just an USB cord you will need a split USB cord.

1. Open “Settings” on your iPad to find your IP address (make sure you’re on the same network as your iPad).

2. Open Terminal, on your Mac (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app). On Windows you can use Putty.

3. At the prompt, SSH into your iPad with the IP address you found in the “Settings” app (make sure OpenSSH is installed!), with the following:

ssh root@[iPad IP address]

For you first time users, the password for your root account will be “alpine”. NOTE: Please change your password ASAP. To do this, once you’ve logged in VIA Terminal, type the following into the command prompt:

passwd root

You will then be prompted for a new password. Please do the same for your “mobile” user as well, by doing the following:

passwd mobile

4. Now, type the following, in Terminal:

mkdir /Volumes
mkdir /Volumes/EXT
ln -s /Volumes/EXT /var/mobile/EXT
nano /var/stash/Applications.xxxxxx/iFile.app/Info.plist (“xxxxxx” is a series of numbers after “Applications”. If you type “/var/stash/Applications” and hit the “Tab” key, it will fill in the rest for you).

5. The nano text editor will now open. Please add the following lines below the first “<dict>”, in the document (this makes iFile look much better on the iPad):

6. Then hit “Ctrl+x”. Followed by “Y”, and then “Enter”. This will save the changes that you made.

7. Now, reboot your iPad. You will notice that your SSH connection will have closed, in Terminal. Re-open terminal, when the iPad reboots, and follow steps 1-3 (without reseting the passwords again).

8. Open iFile, and go into the settings. It is recommended to have the settings set as shown below. The most important is enabling “Application Names”. Hit “Done”. Close out of iFile by hitting the Home button. Restart iFile.

9. In iFile, navigate to “/Volumes/”. Then, select the “Edit” button, in the top right.

10. Check the circle next to the “EXT” folder you created in “Step 4″.

11. Click the “Box with an arrow”, in the bottom right. In the dialogue box that opens, select “Copy/Link”.

12. In iFile, Navigate to “var/mobile/Applications/”. You should now see the names of applications above the actual folder names. Navigate to the “GoodReader” folder, then the “Documents” folder.

13. Click the “Edit” button again. And then click the “Box with an arrow”, in the bottom right. Click the “Create Link” button. You should now see the “EXT” folder. Hit “Done” in the upper right.

14. Now, connect your iPad Camera Connection Kit.

15. Take your hard drive and plug the secondary port into a power supply (in this case, Macbook Pro). Then, plug the main USB port into the iPad. You may see a message similar to “Insufficient power to mount this drive” error message on the iPad. With an external power supply, it should be much more convenient. NOTE: You MUST plug in the external power supply first, or else the iPad will not mount the drive.

16. Now, lets go back to terminal. Type:

ls /dev

What you’re looking for here is the file “disk1s1″. If that does not show up, try steps 15-16 again. If you see “disk1s1″, proceed to step 17.

17. For a FAT32 formatted drive, type the following, into terminal:

mount -t msdos /dev/disk1s1 /Volumes/EXT

It will take a few seconds, and then return you to the command prompt. For an HFS drive, type the following:

mount -t HFS /dev/disk1s1 /Volumes/EXT

18. You are now good to go! You can now access the files in either iFile, or GoodReader. As an example of how to manipulate the files, watch the video below.

19. To unmount the drive, type the following, in Terminal:

umount /dev/disk1s1

20. That’s all!

Finally the jailbreak for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch from the Dev Team is available for download. It’s free and untethered and it’s called “Spirit”. The jailbreak supports every iDevice with firmware version 3.1.2, 3.1.3 or 3.2.

If you have iPhone 3GS or an iPad you should backup your SHSH blobs before using the jailbreak. ECID SHSH or SHSH blob is a unique signature given to every Apple mobile device. When you decide to restore the firmware on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, Apple servers checks this signature.

As you know, if a new firmware is released it becomes impossible to restore the older firmware from iTunes. But Cydia creator tuned up a new server and now it mimics Apple’s verification server and saves your older SHSH blobs so that you can restore back your device to the older firmware. Without having your SHSH blobs saved you may accidentally update new firmware and then you not only lose your jailbreak but also won’t be able to restore the older firmware to re-jailbreak your device.

This is also important because there is a big possibility that Apple will soon find out what exploit is used by the jailbreak and then it will be patched in the form of new firmware.

You can save your SHSH blob in three ways. Here is a guide to make it using AutoSHSH.

1. Download AutoSHSH. (Latest version is here).



2. Start AutoSHSH and plug in you iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad in recovery mode (only one device at a time). Recovery mode launches when you turn off your device and hold down the “Home” button when connecting the USB cable. Then you must see “Connect to iTunes” message and logo on your device.



3. In AutoSHSH click on “Grab my SHSH Blobs Automatically”. When the app will grab the signature you must choose whether you want to save it locally or not. Do not forget where you saved the signature. In the end of the procedure AutoSHSH will also upload it to saurik’s server.

If you have some problems with using AutoSHSH to save your blobs, write it in comments or try saurik’s method or Firmware Umbrella instead.

Now, when you saved you SHSH blobs, you can make the jailbreak. It is recommended for you to sync your device with iTunes beforehand. Then use the following guide:

1. Download “Spirit” (link for Windows, link for Mac OS X).
2. Plug in your device (it will be instantly recognized).
3. Hit the “Jailbreak” button.

Please note that Spirit is not a carrier unlock so it won’t allow you to use unauthorized wireless carriers. The jailbreak is also “sort of beta”, so it may be buggy. DevTeam notifies that some apps in Cydia that are NOT designed for iPad may crash your system and require you to restore so be careful.

Greg Hughes is a developer who recently created an app for syncing iPhone and iPod Touch with iTunes over Wi-fi. It is called “Wi-Fi Sync” and requires a separate application for desktop so that iTunes could sync the device over Wi-fi. You can see how it works from the video above.

At first launch you need to verify the pairing process on both the computer and the device. After that iTunes will be launched and start to sync with your iPhone/iPod Touch. Everything else will work the same as if the connection was via a USB cable.

Greg plans to submit the app to the App Store in the end of this week. It is unknown whether his software breaks the rules of iPhone OS developer agreement, but if non-public application programming interfaces were used in its development then the app will likely be rejected. Anyway, Wi-fi Sync may also appear in the Cydia jailbroken marketplace, and Greg already considers this idea if his app won’t be approved by Apple.

The interesting thing, besides the presence of Cydia and MobileTerminal, is the possibility to have multiple applications open at once. That means that multitasking on iPhone 3G can be enabled. Officially Apple doesn’t want to activate this functionality on iPhone 3G, just iPhone 3GS and later devices.

Geohot has recently announced he updated his BlackRa1n jailbreak and now it supports the iPad. There is still no information about the release date, but his images above show that BlackRa1n and Cydia have been installed successfully and that the iPad can be booted in a verbose mode.

The BlackSn0w Unlock utility by Geohot has been updated by MSFTGuy and PushFix to work with the latest firmware 3.1.3. However it works only with baseband 05.11.07 (!!!).

This modified version of BlackSn0w works for iPhones upgraded with PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze, preserving the baseband version 05.11.07. Users who have updated to OS 3.1.3 by any other method have the 05.12.01 baseband so BlackSn0w and UltraSn0w will not work.

This new version of BlackSn0w will be very useful for iPhone 3GS OS 3.1.3 / Baseband 05.11.07 users who can’t downgrade to earlier versions but still need unlock.

According to iHackintosh, this new version also fixes a small bug making WiFi much more stable.

Blacksn0w RC2 will be available on ModMyi repo soon. If you don’t want to wait just add the source http://cydia.pushfix.info/ to Cydia and install it now.

Important: Blacksn0w for 3.1.3 is still in RC stage and there may be some issues or bugs. This is not an official update performed by Geohot, who has clearly indicated that he will not be updating any tools for the 3.1.3 firmware.

This is good news for for those who use Cydia, an alternative to Apple’s AppStore for jailbreaked iPhones and iPod Touches. Saurik has uploaded a new version of APT that has an optimized cache generator and greatly improves Cydia performance:

“I also uploaded a new version of APT I’ve been working on: it has an optimized cache generator and more error tolerant repository parsing.”

When launching Cydia the next time you will find updates for some APT packages (up to 3 depending on what you have installed). Perform the install and enjoy the speed improvements!

Grooveshark creators claim it supposed to be released in App Store but it wasn’t because Apple has been “ritually rejecting” the app for “primarily selfish reasons”. TechCrunch reports there were spent months of waiting for Apple approval. After Grooveshark’s patience gave out they decided to release its iPhone application via Cydia.

From now on you can download it from the Big Boss Cydia Repository.

ScreenDimmer is a new app that provides longer battery lifetime for your iPhone by either dimming the device’s screen or switching off the backlight.

Auto-lock setting can be an alternative method of saving the battery, but it is not convenient to lock and unlock the device while you are waiting for something. It also provides power save by backlight reduction if not to use the phone for a time predefined by the user.

Why do users need to downgrade the baseband? The answer is simple: if they accidentally upgraded the new firmware and need to run unlock software (blacksn0w and ultrasn0w). Unlocked iPhones do not need Fuzzyband. iPhone 3GS users cannot downgrade baseband with Fuzzyband.

Fuzzyband is available for jailbreaked iPhones in Cydia (repository BigBoss, category “System” ).

Opera Software company just announced that it plans to show Opera Mini browser for iPhone during the Mobile World Congress 2010 (MWC).

But remember that Apple would never allow alternative browsers that are not based on WebKit. So what’s the point of all this? A Cydia Store release? The real intent might be to draw attention to Opera’s Mobile and Mini browsers running on other platforms where the software is actually released like Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Android.

Everything is very simple, just follow these steps:

• Install Winterboard from Cydia.
• Install the Winterboard theme “Simple iPad Theme” from Cydia.
• Install MakeItMine from Cydia. This utility is needed to change the Carrier name to “iPad”.
• Download the application Shrink to reduce the size of the icons.
• Install NYTimes, Classics and Kindle applications from AppStore.

iH8Sn0w has released a beta of Sn0wbreeze a software utility which jailbreaks the iPod Touch 1G, 2G and iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS (old bootrom & non MC). The software runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7 (32 or 64 bit). Sn0wbreeze is similar to PwnageTool for Mac. It will allow you to create custom ipsws which can be built to include Cydia applications and personalized boot logos.

At this time BlackRa1n is still recommended for Windows users with firmware 3.1.2 and RedSn0w for earlier firmwares.

Need For Speed Shift is a wonderful game that recently appeared in AppStore. Many users want to customize and enhance their cars, but they need a lot of money for that. Now users of jailbreaked iPhones can use a money patch from Cydia, that will solve this problem with $6 000 000.

The first called, “Tethering” by Filipe Pina makes changes to the files that the preferences framework makes, then restarts the service. The second called, “Tether” by Ryan Petrich uses the preferences frameworks and calls the functions that the settings app calls.

According to BigBoss, both toggles work well. You can download togles and SBSettings via Cydia (for jailbreaked iPhones only).

This is a great step forward, because Apple did not allow such apps to be in Appstore before. The quality of the recorded video is quite low, however it might be improved in the future. Could the acceptance of iVideoCamera open the door for Cycorder, popular video recording app that can be installed via Cydia?

Operation is very simple: install the tweak via Cydia and run it via a tap on the name of your operator. Now we can control the playback directly from the StatusBar.

As you can see from the images, this tweak transforms the classic lockscreen to an HTC clock. The app is avaliable via Cydia.

Some time ago we have presented a concept of an alternative homescreen for the iPhone created by Geoff Teehan. The designer announced via his blog that this concept will be implemented in collaboration with Saurik, the creator of Cydia.

The new Sringboard will be characterized, following the old concept, browsable by a long list of applications that takes the place of icons, showing notifications, weather and stocks updates in real time. Here is the full screen:

This is quite simple. If you did a jailbreak on your iPhone you need to change the default password. Why? Because hackers can access your phone, read your mail, sms, download other data. The second reason is because there are already several viruses (worms) that use these default passwords.

Here’s a quick step-by-step tutorial.

1. If you don’t have MobileTerminal application installed: run Cydia, search for MobileTerminal and install.
2. Run MobileTerminal.
3. Type passwd and press return.
4. Enter the default user password alpine and press return.
5. Enter a new password and press return.
6. Enter a new password again and press return.
7. Congratulations, you changed it for default mobile user. Let’s do the same for root user.
8. Login as root user: type su root and press return.
9. Type alpine for password
10. Type passwd and press return.
11. Enter a new password and press return.
12. Enter a new password again and press return.
13. That’s it!

The passwords are now changed, and your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch is now a bit more secure than it was before and less vulnerable to the worm detected recently.

Today DevTeam released an ultrasn0w update that fixes a bug for those who run it on firmware 3.1 and 3.1.2 with the 04.26 baseband. This bug was about a missing carrier name in the upper left-hand corner of your home screen. The update is avaliable in Cydia (repository http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com).

We remind you, that ultrasn0w 0.92 doesn’t work with baseband 05.11.07!

[Update]: if your 3G or EDGE connection isn’t working try manually clearing and re-entering your APN.

Geohot has released his BlackSn0w utility. BlackSn0w is an unlock for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. It supports the latest firmware 3.1 and 3.1.2 with baseband 05.11.07 and enables official tethering. Available for both Windows and Mac.

Here is a quick tutorial:
If you havn’t done the jailbreak: go to blackra1n.com, download blackra1n, run it, follow the instructions (it is really simple) to perform the jailbreak. Run balckra1n app on iPhone and install BlackSnow.
If your device is already jailbroken – run Cydia, add repository blackra1n.com and install blacksn0w. That’s it!

The latest version of blackra1n is RC3. It now has hacktivation support, 15 second speed improvement, Tiger+PPC support.

PS: If you just bought a new iPhone 3GS or have one that was made recently (approximately after 40th week after iPhone 3GS release): your device has a new BootROM. Unfortunately it is impossible to run regular jailbreak with this new BootROM. There is a sloution – tethered jailbreak. Everything including unlock will work fine. However every time you restart your iPhone, you need to plug it to a computer with blackra1n installed.

Here is the list of apps for that:

• Can be customized: using Winterboard
• I can run applications simultaneously: thanks to Backgrounder and Kirikae
• I can always use the tethering: thanks to the tweaks available in Cydia
• I call with Skype on 3G network: using VoiceOver3G or 3GUnrestrictor
• Support an open development: with applications to be released via Cydia

This new version allows to run the Advanced Conversion, to create a ringtone from any start point of the mp3. The operation is very simple as usual: launch the application, select the song to convert and then click the Advanced Conversion button. At this point we can move a toolbar that will determine the start point and end point of the track.

Here is a step-by-step tutorial:

1. First start Cydia and search for “iphone-notes”. Install this repository and return to the tab “Search”.

2. Now look for “tethering 3G – 3.1.2″ or “tethering 3GS – 3.1.2″ depending on the model of your device and install the package.

3. Restart the iPhone and then connect to the site www.unlockit.co.nz directly on the iPhone to create a custom APN. Create and install the profile.

After you restart you should see the field “Tethering” in the Settings.

Steven Troughton-Smith has released a new video about the next version of Stack 3.0 which will have a new function, the ability to run the scrolling within the stack. The application is really lightweight and does not need much RAM or battery. The app will be avaliable in Cydia.

DevTeam just released PwnageTool 3.1.4. It allows users to jailbreak firmware 3.1.2 on iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G. It also supports OTB iPhone 3GS with firmware 3.1.x. We remind you that if you need unlock, do not update on regular 3.1.x firmware, use Pwnagetool to create custom firmware to preserve old baseband.

Here is a quick howto:

• Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS: You do not need unlock, just use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone.
• iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS: if you need unlock, use PwnageTool to create a custom firmware with an old baseband. Then update using created custom firmware and install ultrasw0w via Cydia to unlock.
• iPhone 2G: Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw.The baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.
• iPod Touch 1G: Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.
  
• iPod Touch 2G: You must already be jailbroken in order to use PwnageTool. If so, create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.
• iPod Touch 3G: No support yet.

There is only a MAC version of PwnageTool. DevTeam doesn’t plan to create Windows version.
