Sony unveiled its next-gen PSP and Android game store

Today at the media event in Tokyo Sony unveiled its next-gen PlayStation Portable that will challenge Apple's iOS as a game platform.

The device's codename is NGP (Next Generation Portable) and it was built around five concepts: Revolutionary UI, Location-based Entertainment, Social Connectivity and Converging Real and Virtual Reality. And here are the characteristics of the device according to Engadget:

Verizon will offer unlimited data plan for iPhone 4 buyers

This week Engadget unveiled a leaked photo of new Verizon pricing, which shows that the carrier will soon cancel its 150MB data plan, and those who will buy new 3G smartphones will be required to pay $29.99 for every month of unlimited data allowance.

New changes will take place after Verizon will launch CDMA-version of the iPhone 4 on Feb. 10.

Larry Page Will Become Google CEO on April 4

New Google's quarterly earning report has revealed not only the company's current financial situation but also the fact that Google's chief executive (and by the way former member of Apple's board) Eric Shmidt will be soon replaced by Google's cofounder Larry Page.

Another cofounder Sergey Brin will also participate more actively in strategic projects and product development. These management shakeup are announced to become effective on April 4.

New "Google Places" Application for iOS Devices is Launched

Google the new version of application called Google Places. It lets iPhones and iPads users to look for new places and review visited ones.

Google Places allows to look for locations and places nearby and mark visited places by posting individual ratings and reviews. There are default lists of places located nearby, but there is an option to customize this list by adding favorite places found with the help of Google Places. Google Places also provides “Hotspot” rating and review system in order to give an opportunity to rate favorite shop, restaurant or a night club via an iPhone.

“Find My Friends” Service Coming Soon

People are beginning to dig into the newly released iOS 4.3 developer build and has revealed settings for a new feature called "Find My Friends, " which is tied to Apple’s MobileMe service. Apple may be looking to offer a location-based friend-finding service like Loopt and Google Latitude. Moreover, such services have seen incredible growth and interest in the recent years, with several companies like Twitter and Facebook offering location-based features. Location-based services allow you to find your friends by leveraging your mobile phone’s GPS signal. The constant updates can broadcast your location to your friends to know who is nearby.

Microsoft will announce its own TV box later this year

New report published lately by The Seattle Times reveals that Microsoft may introduce its own TV platform to compete with Google TV and Apple TV later this year.

"Microsoft's going to make a splash in this market with a stripped-down version of Windows tailored for set-top boxes and connected TVs. The software is a version of its embedded device software, overlaid with the Windows Media Center interface, with media streaming and remote-control capabilities".

Beta-version Of Jailbreak For iOS 4.2.1 Released

The iPhone Dev team has just released the second beta of their untethered RedSn0w jailbreak (the first beta has been released few hours ago and has more bugs).

New jailbreak is called "Jailbreak Monte", as it uses new "backup method". The iPhone Dev Team warns that their beta-version is not a general release and you should back up all your media before using it. There are also other limitations and bugs:

Apple Abandons AMOLED for iPad because of limited supply

New report published by Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes reveals that Apple will not use AMOLED displays in its next-gen iPad because of insufficient supplies.

Currently the component makers in China and Taiwan attempt to increase their production, but it is still not enough for Apple.

Apple seeks more iOS developers for its navigation software?

Four new job offers have been posted on Apple's site and reveal that company is looking for a software engineers to work on its navigation software.

All four job listings offer a full-time job in Santa Clara Valley, California. The description explains that Apple wants "outstanding engineers to deliver the next generation of Apple products".

Japanese Publishers Accuse Apple in Illegal Distribution of Their Content

According to the Wall Street Journal, yesterday the Japan Book Publishers Association, the Electronic Book Publishers Association of Japan, the Japan Magazine Publishers Association and Digital Comic Association issued a joint press release, where Apple's content is called as infringing and "illegal". Particularly, the works well-known Japanese authors Keigo Higashimo and Haruki Murakami were mentioned as illegally scanned and distributed via the App Store.

“The associations we represent believe that Apple bears grave responsibility for this problem".

US Army wants to equip all soldiers with an Apple iPhone or Android phone

The U.S. Army seems to indent to equip its soldiers with a smartphone making it a standard piece of soldier’s equipment. Soldiers will be given opportunity to choose between Apple's iPhone or one running Google Android. The Army is even going to pay the soldier's monthly phone bill. Army – issued smartphones are already used for different purposes but now it id interested in deploying handsets in war zones. The idea is to make it easier for soldiers to access data and receive updates on the go, no matter where they are.

Google Announced New Version of Android Market

This week Google has released a new version of its client app for Android Market, which will work on any smartphone running Android OS 1.6 or higher.

The company aims to facilitate the process of discovering new software and its purchase. That's why new Android Market will have a Cover Flow-like style of app listings and include new categories like Widgets and Live Wallpapers, as currently the catalog is filled pretty much with these kinds of software.
