Apple Wants To Make Set-Top Box For Live TV Content

apple set b

Following the report from yesterday on a possible Apple cable set-top box, The Wall Street Journal today shared more details on Apple’s plans.

According to the report, Apple wants to make the device that would allow viewers to watch any TV show at any moment through a cloud-based DVR service that would store shows online. This service would allow viewers to stream a show within minutes after it started airing live.

“Another significant feature of the Apple set-top device is likely to be its user interface, which could resemble the navigation icons on Apple's iPad. While the design may change, the interface is expected to be easier for people to use than existing cable on-screen menus, widely viewed as clunky.

Apple's device also may create space on the TV screen for social media features, such as sharing TV shows through services like Twitter Inc., the people said”.

Also Apple wants that users can transfer content from the device on iPhones, iPads and other Apple products.

The WSJ says that Apple has been in negotiations with cable providers like Time Warner Cable and Comcast, and with companies that control TV content. The report notes that terms of existing agreements between content and cable companies might not allow them to seal a deal for using Apple’s devices without permission of content owners.

Earlier this month CEO of CBS Les Moonves said that his company is willing to offer its content on a future Apple TV set depending "what we get paid" and "what the terms are".

iPhone 5 Production Underway for an Expected Fall Launch

85883-500

Mac blog MacOtakara reported on Saturday that their sources from Chinese claimed Apple had started production of the next-generation iPhone. The rumored smartphone will reportedly feature design changes, including the addition of glass to the unit's "uni-body" backplate. Unlike the iPhone 4 and 4S which boast a "glass sandwich" design with tough Gorilla Glass front and back coverings, the upcoming handset will reportedly have a backplate only "partially covered" by the tough material. Other significant change is the 4-inch Retina display with 16:9 aspect ratio.

The evidence was discovered by the developer Cody Cooper through the to several older Intel graphics solutions for which map features such as shading are disabled. Though, it is unclear exactly what form Apple's maps would take on the Mac and whether the references are simply for hooks into map-enabled apps on OS X or if there is some more significant mapping solution coming to the Mac.

MacPro

Apple confirmed that its CEO Tim Cook sent an e-mail to a Facebook group page dedicated to the Mac Pro on Monday and said that the company is indeed "working on something really great" for 2013, allaying current Mac Pro owners' fears that the desktop has reached its end of life.

The slightly updated Mac Pro presented by Apple at WWDC on Monday wasn't the significant revamp. The machines received 12-core Xeon chips, but CPUs are based on Intel's two-year-old Westmere-EP architecture and not newer Xeon E5 silicon.
