iPad Air Wins Best Mobile Tablet Award at Mobile World Congress

Apple’s iPad Air won the Best Mobile Tablet award at Mobile World Congress yesterday, even though the company from Cupertino did not participate in the annual exhibition devoted to all kinds of new gadgets organized and held by GSM Association in Barcelona. Rumors on iPhone Nano continue to distract from MWC

mobile_world_congress_2011

Today The U.K.'s Daily Mail also confirmed rumors on iPhone Nano, which is set to be released this summer separately from the iPhone 5. Anonymous sources were cited in the publication to reveal both already known and unknown details on the new device:

  • iPhone Nano will cost $200 without a carrier subsidy or contract;
  • The device will be a third smaller than the iPhone 4;
  • No "Home" button;
  • The handset may be delayed or scrapped.

It was also explained why the new device may be popular.

"Phone users on tighter budgets have been shunning the pricey iPhones in favour of less expernsive models which have Google's popular Android software. Apple will now hope to lure away customers from the likes of Nokia".

Besides that, the publication reported that Apple has been working on new iPhone hardware and software that would allow customers to bypass the carriers and choose a network by themselves directly from the handset.

Opera showed their browser for iPhone

iphone-opera

Opera had finally demonstrated new Opera Mini for the iPhone at the Mobile World Congress.

In comparison to the default iPhone browser it looks pretty quick - Opera Mini loads the New York Times like 5x faster than its rival. Its main disadvantage is that it lacks the all-important feature pinch-to-zoom, and the only alternative is a method of double-tapping the webpages. Generally, the iPhone owners will find that the usual silky smooth scrolling through favorite webpages and responsive interface are maintained at the very best.

Unlike other platforms, the iPhone variant actually remembers the website you happened to browse last - the feature that will obviously be favored by a legion of iPhone admirers.

Company says as soon as beta tag is removed the browser will be submitted for approval. And it is not obvious whether Apple approve it or not, because it maintains the option of rejecting any app that "duplicates functionality" of the apps Apple builds into the iPhone. Opera co-founder Jon von Tetzchner has his own point of view on this:

"Opera Mini is the world's most popualr mobile browser and users on the iPhone deserve a choice."

Opera Mini for iPhone will be shown next week at MWC 2010

opera-mini-iphone

Opera Software company just announced that it plans to show Opera Mini browser for iPhone during the Mobile World Congress 2010 (MWC).

"We are thrilled to offer journalists and partners an exclusive preview of Opera Mini for iPhone during the year’s biggest mobile event,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software. “This is a unique opportunity to introduce the fast, feature-rich Opera Mini experience for the iPhone, and to showcase our latest beta releases of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini on other platforms and devices. Opera’s mission is to bring the Web to the world, and by making Opera Mini available on yet another platform, we are one step closer."

But remember that Apple would never allow alternative browsers that are not based on WebKit. So what's the point of all this? A Cydia Store release? The real intent might be to draw attention to Opera's Mobile and Mini browsers running on other platforms where the software is actually released like Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Android.

Sygic turn-by-turn GPS navigation

iphonegpsconcept

One of the most elusive and desired apps for iPhone is turn-by-turn GPS navigation. We heard that TomTom was developing a GPS navigator. To date, it hasn't shipped. Recently, the focus has been on xGPS, an app that requires a jailbroken iPhone to work.

At Mobile World Congress 2009 (MWC09) in Barcelona, Spain, Sygic is demoing a version of their namesake GPS navigation software running on an iPhone 3G. The Sygic software uses maps from TeleAtlas, the same company that supplies map data for Google Maps. Sygic produces similar software for Windows Mobile and Symbian devices.

Applicatin has turn-by-turn GPS directions with voice prompts, points of interest, support for multiple countries, and locally-stored maps.

Offline GMail for iPhone

During Mobile World Congress 2009 Google demoed a version of GMail that will still work even when Airplane mode is on. Airplane mode effectively takes the iPhone offline, but by using local storage capabilities found in HTML5, users would still be able to browse and manipulate their mail. A video shows it in action:
