Samsung guilty of patent infringement, Apple awarded nearly $1.05B

Jurors deciding the patent Apple v. Samsung suit have reached a verdict, finding Samsung to have infringed on certain Apple patents, according to in-court reports from The Verge. The damages owed total nearly $1.05 billion for Samsung and zero for Apple.

Apple’s Retail Stores Have Seen 300 Million Visitors Thus Far In 2012

The Loop today shared some new data on the performance of Apple’s retail chain.

Following the two openings of Canadian retail stores this weekend in Coquitlam, British Columbia and Halifax, Nova Scotia, Apple currently owns 375 stores worldwide, and the company notes that its retail stores have seen about 300 million visitors thus far this year. This means that each store have seen roughly 3500 customers per day. The Loop reports:

More than $60,000 in "computers and personal items" stolen from Steve Jobs' home

The San Jose Mercury News reports that the Palo Alto home of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was among the homes which were burglarized last month. Jobs' home on Waverley Street in Palo Alto was burglarized on July 17. Among the items taken were more than $60,000 worth of "computers and personal items." The Jobs home has been undergoing renovation and it is unclear whether the family is currently living in the house while the work is being performed.

More Early iPhone and iPad Prototype Designs Surfaced

AllThingsD has now put together a gallery of dozens of images of the early iPhone and iPad prototype designs from the court documents revealed during the ongoing lawsuit between Apple and Samsung.

Among the many filings on Saturday was a document with dozens of sketches and prototypes for both the iPhone and iPad. Some had already been included in earlier filings, but Saturday’s collection was particularly extensive.

Google: Apple Inventories That Are Commercially Essential Should Be Treated As Standards

CEO of Apple Tim Cook has said that he think other companies should “invent their own stuff” instead of copying inventions created by Apple.

Kent Walker, General Counsel of Google disagrees, and this month send a letter to Judiciary Committee of US Senate saying that commercial inventions that influence “consumer welfare” should be treated the same way as technical patents.

Apple Is Placing All Eligible Products Back on EPEAT Registry

Last week we reported that Apple asked EPEAT to withdraw its products from its registry, and said that it would no longer register its devices in EPEAT for evaluation. EPEAT assesses the environmental impact of electronic devices and its rating is used by many governmental organizations and corporations as a yardstick for purchases of electronics.

Apple Released TV Commercial For Retina Display MacBook Pro



Apple has just launched a new TV commercial for the MacBook Pro unveiled yesterday, focusing on the machine’s breakthrough Retina display.

“The radical new MacBook Pro with Retina display. Innovation in every dimension”.

While Apple has run several high-profile ad campaign for Macs such as “Switch” and “Get a Mac”, the company rarely promotes specific Mac products in television ads. But with the Retina display and the new form factor in the new MacBook Pro, the company is obviously interested in attracting widespread attention to this product.

Apple, Samsung drop 'impressive' number of patent claims against each other

Apple and Samsung have greatly reduced the number of patent infringement claims against one another in their California lawsuit. Late on Monday, Apple made a filing in the suit that roughly cut the number of patent infringement, and five hours after Apple reduced the scope of its complaint, Samsung responded in kind, and offered to drop five of its 12 asserted patents.

But these actions were caused by the court order. The Judge Lucy Koh last week ordered the companies to cut down the number of claims they are making against each other. "I think that's cruel and unusual punishment to a jury, so I'm not willing to do it," Koh said of the multitude of patents and products included in the case. "If you're going to trial in July, this is not going to be acceptable”.

Apple Unlikely to Use Liquidmetal Alloys

Dr. Atakan Peker, who discovered and developed the formulation that later became Liquidmetal, said in an interview with Business Insider that Apple would need investment of $300 million to $500 million and over three years to ready the technology for mass-production of its electronic devices. He also mentioned that there is "no suitable manufacturing infrastructure yet to take full advantage of this alloy technology."

"This is a technology that has yet to be matured and perfected both in manufacturing process and application development," Peker said. "I should note that this is a completely new and different metal technology."

Apple announced that it will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 11 through June 15 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. Tickets were sold out in just two hours ($1,599 each).

Apple Reports 2012 Second Quarter Results

Apple announced the company results for Q2 2012. Apple has $110 billion in cash reserves, which is up from $81.5 billion in September 2011. Apple was also up in every other segment with $18.4 billion in short-term marketable securities (up from $16.1 billion) and long-term marketable securities at $81.6 billion, which is up from $55.6 billion in the previous six-month period ending September 2011.

Here are some interesting numbers that Apple reported for the quarter:

iTunes and App Store:

  • $1.9 billion in iTunes revenue (a 35 percent YOY increase)
  • 600,000 apps (200,000 iPad specific apps)

iOS devices:

  • 365 million iOS device sales
  • $22.7 billion in revenue from iPhone and accessories
  • 6.6 billion in revenue from iPad and accessories.
  • 7.7 million iPod sales
  • 94 percent of Fortune 500 and 75 percent of global 500 testing or deploying iPad

iCloud:

  • 125 million iCloud users—up 25 million from February

Retail Stores:

  • $4.4 billion in retail store revenue, up 8 percent
  • 363 Apple Stores
  • 826,000 Macs sold in store—half to new customers
  • $12.2 million average revenue per-store (up from $9.9 million)
  • 85 million visitors to retail—18,000 per store, per week

Apple working on new power management technology for future Macs

According to AppleInsider, Apple is working on a new power management technology for the next-generation Macs. Such technology will allow devices to be more efficient and run even longer on battery power.

Apple's plans were revealed in a newly published job application discovered by AppleInsider. The advertised job describes the role as "an excellent opportunity to work on the forefront of new power management technologies." The new hire will join a team that will innovate in power use from concept investigation and design through product implementation.

Tim Cook Included In TIME’s 100 Most Influential People List 2012

Walter Isaacson has been also included on the TIME's list thanks to the remarkable success of his book about Steve Jobs.
