Last year Philips released its iOS-controlled "Hue" lighting system that allows users to personalize the lighting experience.
Today Philips announced a major update to the Hue adding many new features. Among the most interesting is integration with IFTTT protocols to allow the system to provide visual alerts for different situations.

Bloomberg Businessweekreports that Amazon is working on a set-top box to stream video content over the Internet via its Instant Video and Amazon Prime services.
The box will compete with similar products like the Roku and the Apple TV, as well with a more versatile devices such as Sony's Playstation and Microsoft's Xbox that have moved into the streaming video field in recent years. The report notes:
According to a report from TechCrunch, Amazon has acquired natural language search platform Evi for $26 million. Originally, the Evi app was distributed through the App Store, but Apple had threatened to delete the app over similarities to Siri. However, later the company said that it would "work with" the developer to reduce similarities. Evi was first launched in early 2012 and it is still available on the App Store as a free download. EA announced that a new gameSimCity will be available for the Mac from June 11. Today Nuance announced a new mobileadvertising platform called ‘Voice Ads’ to bring its Siri-like functionality into mobile advertising. The general concept of the new platform, which is available as an SDK for advertising companies, is to let users engage in a two-way, interactive conversation with a mobile ad and ask questions about the advertised product in a Siri-like manner.

While Android and iOS might appear poised to lock up the smartphone market for good, it is worth looking at the history of the smartphone market to understand just how quickly fortunes can change. In 2005, the market was dominated by Palm, Symbian and BlackBerry. However, by the following year all three had ceded control to Microsoft as the new market share leader. 2008-2010 saw BlackBerry stage a comeback to assume the #1 position before eventually giving way to the upstart Android platform in 2011. The only key player in the current smartphone market never to have owned the market share lead, interestingly enough, is iOS.
