The History of the Smartphone Market From 2005-2012 [Chart]





Check out these charts that visualize the rise and fall of key players in the smartphone market since 2005. The data is from comScore's 2013 Mobile Future in Focus whitepaper.

While Android and iOS might appear poised to lock up the smartphone market for good, it is worth looking at the history of the smartphone market to understand just how quickly fortunes can change. In 2005, the market was dominated by Palm, Symbian and BlackBerry. However, by the following year all three had ceded control to Microsoft as the new market share leader. 2008-2010 saw BlackBerry stage a comeback to assume the #1 position before eventually giving way to the upstart Android platform in 2011. The only key player in the current smartphone market never to have owned the market share lead, interestingly enough, is iOS.

Retina MacBook Pro User Filed A Class-Action Suit Against Apple



Since Apple launched its 15,4-inch Retina MacBook Pro in June last year, there have been an increasing number of complaints from users experiencing issues with the device. The most reported issue is one that causes a ghosting or burn-in problem on its display and has resulted in a support thread with more than 365, 215 views.

Ferrari In Talks With Apple To Broaden Their Partnership



 

As Ferrari unveils its new 963 horse power “LaFerrari” hybrid car, Ferrari CEO Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo said Apple and Ferrari are in talks to broaden their partnership in the sphere of in-car entertainment. According to Bloomberg, Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo said that Ferrarri would be “more precise” about their partnership with Apple over the next few months.

Google Glass Can Tether To iPhone Via Bluetooth



Joshua Topolsky from The Verge has written a lengthy report about his experiences using on-face computer Google Glass.

Google Glass is a small computer mounting to an eyeglass frame that has a display visible only to the user. The device includes GPS, a built-in camera, which can record what the wearer sees, and Bluetooth and Wi-FI connections. The wearable device can handle many of the tasks performed on smartphones, including sending text messages, showing weather reports, giving driving directions and more.

EA launches Origin client for Mac



Digital distribution platform Origin for Mac from EA was launched today; this was first noted by AppleInsider. The Origin for the Mac was originally announced in August, 2011 and began to undergo alpha testing in late January.

FTC Recommends Mobile Platforms And App Devs Improve Privacy Disclosures



The Federal Trade Commission today published a report, where it recommends how key players in the mobile ecosystem can better inform their consumers about how their personal data is being used. In its report, the FTC named several companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and BlackBerry as well as advertising networks, app developers, app developer trade associations and analytics companies.

Amazon optimizes its MP3 store to attract customers using iOS devices.



Today, Amazon announced about optimization of the music store for Safari app on iOS devices. This move is the company's desire to dominate the digital music market.

"Since the launch of the Amazon Cloud Player app for iPhone and iPod touch, a top request from customers has been the ability to buy music from Amazon right from their devices. For the first time ever, iOS users have a way do that – now they can access Amazon’s huge catalog of music, features like personalized recommendations, deals like albums for $5, songs for $0.69, and they can buy their music once and use it everywhere,” said Steve Boom, Vice President of Amazon Music.

Apple Locking Screenshots For Apps Submitted For Approval



Yesterday Apple announced on its Developer Portal that appscreenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect after the app has been approved.

“Beginning January 9, app screenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect once your app has been approved. New screenshots may be uploaded when you submit a binary for an update to an existing app or a new app”.

Redesigned iOS App Switcher Will Soon Come To Cydia



Apple has given little attention to updating the app switcher in its iOS since its introduction in iOS 4, so interface designer @Sentry_NC has tried his hand at developing a new concept for fast app switching in iOS.

In October, he introduced a mockup of iOS app switcher on The Verge forum, which takes advantage of the elongated screen on the iPhone 5 and provides easy access to app management tools and settings.

Google Launches Free Matching Music Service



Google added to its Google Play music service a new song matching service that is similar to iTunes Match. This means that users will no longer have to spend plenty of time uploading gigabytes of music as it was previously.

It is worth noting that users do not have to pay subscription fee for Google's matching service like with Apple and Amazon’s services. Last month this service was released for European Google Play, so this launch is new for U.S. users.

Kickfolio Allows Users To Demo iOS Apps In Browsers



Launched this week, a new HTML5-based platform Kickfolio allows developers to share and test their builds of iOS apps in the browser. They just need to upload a zipped version of the iOS app and the service generates a link to a private testing web page displaying an interactive, CSS and HTML 5 version of the iOS app that is controllable from the keyboard and mouse in landscape or portrait mode.

New iMac Available For Order In The U.S.



Apple has already begun accepting orders for its new iMac models in the online store. The new iMac models offer significantly reduced thickness and add a new Fusion Drive combining a traditional hard drive and flash storage to maximize speed and capacity.
