iCloud replaces iTunes for iOS device syncing

iTunes10

John Gruber, founder of Daring Fireball web site, claims that he heard iCloud is something more than a new music service, it’s sooner will be a full replacement for iTunes.

Don’t think of iCloud as the new MobileMe; think of iCloud as the new iTunes.

Instead of simply revamped MobileMe with a new name, new UI, new functionalities and call it iCloud, Gruber pictures a scenario where iCloud becomes the new standard to sync all kinds of media and information to an iOS device:

Samsung: Apple's Accusations Are Not Legally Problematic

Apple-vs-Samsung

According to Samsung mobile communications business head, Apple’s statement that Samsung completely dubbed such devices as iPhone and iPad has absolutely no grounds. Here is what J.K. Shin said to the interviewer from The Wall Street Journal:

"We didn't copy Apple's design. We have used many similar designs over the past years and it [Apple's allegation] will not be legally problematic."

Samsung’s Lawyers Ask Apple To See iPhone 5 and iPad 3

samsung suit

Samsung’s lawyers have asked Apple to hand over “final, commercial versions” of the next-generation iPhone and iPad and the retail packaging design of the devices. The company wants to evaluate if their future products, like the Droid Charge and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, could have similar features with them. This countersuit was filed after Samsung was asked to hand over Apple its prototypes of the Droid Charge, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G and Galaxy S 2. In order to avoid future confusion with the Apple’s products, Samsung is asking the court to apply the same procedure that granted Apple’s lawyers access to Samsung’s upcoming products.

Senator Asks Apple and Google to Require Clear Privacy Policies for Apps

core_location_map

U.S. Senator Al Franken has sent out a letter to Apple and Google requesting that the companies require developers to include "clear and understandable" privacy policies for apps available in their marketplaces.

At the hearing, I asked Dr. Tribble and Mr. Davidson whether Apple and Google would commit to requiring that all applications in the Apple App Store and Android App Market have clear and understandable privacy policies. I am writing today to renew this request, and ask if each of your companies would be willing to adopt this simple first step towards further protecting your users' privacy.

Apple Temporarily Freezing In-App Purchase Approvals

in-app purchases

A number of iOS developers have been unable for over a week now to get their in-app purchase content approved by Apple, as the company requires in the iTunes Connect developer portal to test IAP with a test user account, but this account has been offline with no explanation from Apple.

As a matter of policy, Apple requires developers to test in-app purchases (IAP) with a test user account before the application in question can be approved. Unfortunately, this test account has been offline for a week now with no word as to why. If you are a developer, you can see the relevant thread on Apple’s own developer forums here.

OmniVision Introduces 5 MP Sensor With 1080p Video Recording

iPhone-Camera

DigiTimes claimed that the new iPhone 4S would contain an 8 MP camera from OmniVision Technologies, and to some degree it makes sense. Sony’s CEO in April made a fleeting comment suggesting that it would be supplying Apple with an 8MP camera for the next iPhone.

OmniVision  introduced a new 5MP image sensor, the OV5690, that was developed to produce the “best-in-class image quality” whilst being an effective solution for slimmer mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers by reducing the size of the camera module. With contradicting reports on whether the next iPhone will contain a 5 MP camera or an 8 MP camera, this new product certainly lends weight to the suggestion that it could have a 5 MP camera.

Apple Proposes Standard To Make SIM Cards Smaller

micro_sim_iphone_4

According to Reuters, an executive of Orange has confirmed the French carrier is backing Apple’s plans for a new standard to make SIM cards smaller in order to use them in future thinner mobile devices. The proposed standard aims at reducing the size of SIM cards, which are currently implemented as “micro” models in the iPhone 4 and iPad.

We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to (European telecoms standards body) ETSI for a smaller SIM form factor — smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad,” said Anne Bouverot, Orange’s head of mobile services.

“iPhone 5G” Case Suggests Thinner Bezel, New Camera Flash Placement

iPhone5-case1

Alibaba.com started selling a new case for co-called “iPhone 5G” that suggests a new camera flash placement for the next generation iPhone, as well as a thinner bezel with an horizontal edge-to-edge display design. The case has a slot for the camera flash on the opposite side of the lens, which is rumored to receive an upgrade for the iPhone Apple will likely unveil in September. As far as theories about the larger display go, in April rumors claimed  that Apple was working on a completely redesigned iPhone, a larger display, a new Home button, and worldphone capabilities.

Several rumors in the past months suggested Apple could release a redesigned iPhone 5 with a larger screen, NFC compatibility and a tweaked Home button design, but recently multiple sources and analysts close to “people familiar with Apple’s plans” seem to believe the next-generation iPhone will launch in September with a design similar to the iPhone 4, and upgrades to the CPU, RAM, and rear-facing camera lens.

braunipod-1

Bill Buxton, Microsoft Research scientist, has been collecting gadgets that influenced today’s technology. A large number of them seem to have directly inspired many of Apple’s most iconic products and innovations. For example, the Dieter Rahms-design transistor radio, which inspired the first four generations of the venerable iPod, upon the success of which Apple built almost all of its modern fortunes.

Labels Hoping Apple’s Music Service Will Launch at WWDC

itunescloud

Four major music labels in the US (Warner Music Group, EMI, Sony, Universal) are hoping Apple’s rumored cloud music service will launch next month during the WWDC. The labels are counting on Apple to provide a full-featured music service with iTunes Store integration that would force competitors like Amazon and Google to start paying licensing fees for their “music locker” services. Amazon and Google services users might be able to upload songs they illegally downloaded from the Internet.
