China Unicom and China Mobile Are Set To Launch Cheap iPhone Competitors

iphone comepetitor

Apple’s sales in China are up sixfold and reached $3.8 billion in second quarter revenues. Chinese market remains largely untapped and Apple could increase iPhone sales there by reaching agreements with additional Chinese carriers. However until now Apple hasn’t succeeded in reaching the agreement with the largest wireless operator China Mobile, and the sole Apple’s carrier in this country remains China Unicom. Moreover, according to DigiTimes, Apple’s iconic smartphone will compete with devices from both carriers:

Steve Jobs Resigns, Tim Cook Named New CEO of Apple

Steve-Jobs

By the letter sent by Steve Jobs to Apple's Board of Directors he has resigned as CEO of Apple. But he remains Chairman of the Board and appoints Tim Cook as his successor. The Board of Directors has approved his request.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Dual-Mode iPhone 5 Shows Up in App Developer Logs

verizon_iphone_mdm

At least one developer reportedly has found evidences confirming fact that Apple is testing the dual-mode iPhone 5, supporting both GSM and CDMA in one phone, against current App Store apps.

The logs show that the app has been briefly tested by a handful of people using what is almost certainly an iPhone 5, evidently running iOS 5, sporting two distinct sets of mobile network codes (MNC) / mobile country codes (MCC). Those codes can be used to uniquely identify mobile carriers.

Sure enough, some registrations for the app – which the developer also asked not to be named – were logged from a new Apple device, using the MNC/MCC codes from both Verizon and AT&T.

Apple Testing LTE in iOS 5 and Hiring More LTE Engineers

lte

Early last week there appeared some rumors that Apple has been testing a 4G LTE-enabled iPhone with carriers. In an "internal iOS test build" was found a property list file (.plist) for LTE. This might mean that Apple was already testing LTE hardware. This LTE.plist file, however, was found only in some of the builds (GSM iPhone 4, CDMA iPad 2) and it was related to Apple's internal "Fieldtest" application.

LTE is the term the next generation wireless broadband network that is currently being deployed by both Verizon and AT&T. Data speeds for LTE should be significantly faster than the iPhone's existing 3G network.

Other rumors suggest that it is unlikely that Apple will make the jump to LTE so early with the iPhone 5, because, as Apple's Tim Cook said, the first generation of LTE chipsets forced a lot of design compromises, and Apple was unwilling to make those compromises. Such compromises could include very short battery life for mobile phones.  But, as far as we know, AT&T had installed 4G LTE equipment in a major Apple retail store and Apple had put out a job listing for field test engineers with expertise in LTE.

British Airways Cabin Crews Use iPads To Improve Customer Service

British Airways

Earlier it was reported that Delta Air Lines has tested iPads to facilitate communications with flight crews. Now, iPads are tested in cabin crews of British Airways to improve customer service aboard.

The company states that the iPad can help to identify the Executive Club status of their customers, what preferences in meal they have, their previous travel arrangements. With iPads, the cabin crew can quickly get access to a lot of necessary information such as timetables, customer service updates and safety manuals.

At present, after all passengers have boarded, cabin crew are handed a long paper containing information about up to 337 customers. Using iPads, cabin crew can just update information on the screen through 3G networks and get all the necessary data about passengers on board.

The iPad is currently tested with 100 cabin crew and British Airways plans to roll out the program to all senior crew members in the coming months.

Apple Turns To Samsung For Manufacturing iPad 2 Display Panel

iPad 2 display

According to DigiTimes report, Apple has turned to suppliers other than LG Display (specifically Chimei Innolux and Samsung) because of some issues with 9.7-inch panel produced by LGD for the iPad 2. Apparently LG Display has failed to meet Apple’s July orders for around 1 million units and also it hasn’t fulfilled requirements in impact tests, during which backlight units of iPads 2 failed. Reportedly Apple has suspended its orders for new displays with LG, which until now has been the largest manufacturer of display panels for iPad 2.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 Blocked By Apple in the European Union

galaxy_tab_10_1

After a district court in Dusseldorf, Germany, granted a preliminary injunction, Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been barred from distribution in the European Union (except for the Netherlands, because a separate lawsuit in the Netherlands is already underway). Apple spokesperson Kristin Huguet confirmed the injunction to Bloomberg:  ”It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging. This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.”

Apple alleged that the Galaxy Tab imitates the iPad and infringes on various intellectual property rights owned by Apple. Apple asked the Landgericht (district court) of Düsseldorf, Germany, to order an injunction under which Samsung is threatened with fines of up to EUR 250,000 (US$ 350,000) for each violation or imprisonment of Samsung’s management for up to two years in the event of continued infringement. Those are standard sanctions under German tort law for contempt of a preliminary injunction.

Last week, Samsung had to delay the launch of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia in response to Apple's request for a preliminary injunction in that country.

Carriers Currently Testing iPhone 5 in Sealed Boxes

iphone5

In June it was reported that the carries were testing the new iPhone 5. And now The Guardian offers some details on the carrier testing process, suggesting that Apple could be ready for September launch of the iPhone 5.

My carrier sources tell me that the boxes in which the new iPhone hardware is encased have been transported to carriers for testing. This is an important step in the release cycle for any phone. ... The next iPhones go for their testing inside locked and sealed boxes so that the carriers can carry out checks on their network compatibility in their labs. It's very high security, as you could guess; my understanding is that barely anyone inside the carriers gets to open those boxes, and even when they do the hardware is encased in a dummy body which means there's no clue to what the actual phone will do.
