iPod foils potential kidnapping attempt

Thanks new iPod touch, which looks enough like the iPhone 4, the girl from Stanton, Delaware, hadn’t been kidnapped. The incident happened in the past week on Wednesday, the person suspected in kidnapping attempt asked the 12-year-old girl to get into his van in front of her middle school. But the girl, instead of panicking, put her iPod against her ear and told him she was dialing 911. Believing that she was using an iPhone, the driver immediately sped off. The local authorities didn’t eventually get called (iPod touch doesn’t have call function) and are still looking for the suspect.

Walt Mossberg has reviewed new MacBook Airs



Famous technology journalist Walt Mossberg published another review where he analyzes new MacBook Air notebooks and describes them as "gorgeous, very thin and light, but very sturdy aluminum computers".

After using notebooks for some time he made a conclusion that the 11.6-inch system is very iPad-like, the battery life of the devices is "strong" and the systems wake up from sleep every time almost instantly. Though such machines won't fit as primary computers, especially for power users, they should fit fine for light-duty users. Walt revealed that even the $999 model can run 7-8 programs at the same time, even if there are iTunes, Safari Web browser with couple of dozens of apps opened and Microsoft Office among them.

Another Apple's patent application reveals new methods of protecting electronic devices

New Apple's application with a title "Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products" was published this week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The document describes a cost-effective system, which can place a nitride layer on the surface of stainless steel exterior.

Apple hosting stealth iOS developer summit?

Apple is said to be hosting an exclusive, secret iPhone and iPad developer’s summit in Cupertino, starting next Tuesday and running for 3 days, which the company is going to hold to improve the quality of software on the App Store. As known, this event will be a more intimate version of the iPhone Tech Talks that Apple held last year.

Of course, the stealth summit will be invitation only event, so Apple will invite only those developers, who it wants to see there. They will be granted time with Apple engineers, and may receive help with their applications. It is believed the event is timed to the release of iOS 4.2. It will be the first time then the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch will all be running the same version of iOS.

Light leaks causing camera issues with Apple's white iPhone 4

Apple on Tuesday reported that its white model of iPhone 4 was delayed again until spring 2011. As usual, the company didn’t offer any reasonable reasons for the delays.
But yesterday Cult of Mac web-site posted some information provided by an anonymous source "with connections at Apple". The source claims that the main reason is iPhone 4’s white glass, which influences pictures quality.

Apple’s new Lincoln Park, Chicago Store

New Apple’s Store in Lincoln Park, Chicago opens this Saturday. The first 4000 visitors will get special t-shirts. This new store is really important for Apple that is why the company placing it in the same category as their recent London, Shanghai, and Paris stores. Lincoln Park store has three entrances. The area is divided in three parts: the northern part of the store has a retail focus, the southern one covers Apple’s one-to-one program, and the center entrance is something new to Apple’s retail chain.

New photos claim to show Apple's prototype CDMA Verizon iPhone

The bloger Richy Rich obtained some interesting photos of prototype CDMA iPhone in Device Verification Test phase. He believes that pictures show us the device run by the “Inferno” operating system. Same one was seen on photos and videos of iPhone 4 prototype. It is known that the rumored CDMA-variant of the iPhone 4 has code number "N92DVT", which you may see on one of the shots. New iPhone version is expected to be universal, support both CDMA and GSM standards.

First news about UltraSn0w 4.1 - future unlock for iPhone iOS 4.1



This is what MuscleNerd have seen while trying to make iPhone unlock for iOS 4.1 work. Quite strange and scary. While we can see that UltraSn0w 4.1 is not ready yet, this is good that the work is in progress.

iPhone 4 Variation Hits Final Field Testing Stage? iPhone 5 at Engineering Verification Test Stage?

Boy Genius Report’s source claims that Apple almost completes the final field testing of a tweaked version of the iPhone 4, known as "iPhone3,2", which is expected to be the Verizon or CDMA-compatible iPhone 4 model. The iPhone3,2 will have similar SIM card slot to iPhone 4 slot, which is not suitable for CDMA phone. Perhaps, Apple is going to release model, which will provide support for both GSM and CDMA and will be compatible with all carriers. The source also reports that the fifth-generation iPhone has entered the "engineering verification test" stage, which the CDMA-based iPhone 4 completed in May.

Apple Seeds Mac OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H555 to Developers

Apple seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.5, termed Build 10H555, to its Mac developer community for testing. There are no documented known issues with the update. This time Apple asks developers to pay particular attention on testing of 3D Graphics, Printing, QuickTime, Time Machine, and USB Devices. Mac OS X 10.6.5 is expected to arrive any time in the next few weeks.

New version of MobileMe Calendar Is Now Available to Anyone

Yesterday calendar web-application for MobileMe exited its beta stage and became available to all members. To start using the new version members should sign in to me.com/calendar, then click the "Upgrade now" button and follow the instructions. Those users who had tested the beta version of the product will receive the update automatically.

According to Apple, the new MobileMe Calendar is even more integrated with the calendar app in iOS devices. It is also regularly synced with a Mac or PC so the data will always be up-to-date. Any changes made by user are also automatically pushed to the mobile device.

Apple releases iOS 4.2 Beta 3 and iTunes 10.1 Beta 2 for developers



Apple has just released the firmware iOS 4.2 Beta 3, together with SDK and iTunes 10.1 Beta 2. The SDK is build 10M2423 and the firmware is build 8C5115c. iTunes 10.1 Beta 2 is a pre-release version to support testing of printing from iOS apps. Developers can download the firmware, SDK, and iTunes from the iPhone Developer Center.

Apple developed 7-inch iPad alongside current model

Jim Dalrymple,  The Loop's author, in a commentary on the latest rumors of Apple plans to release a 7-inch iPad model early next year, notes that such a device has existed in Apple's labs for quite some time. The fact is, Apple already has a 7-inch iPad. The two devices were developed at the same time. They have the same specifications, except, of course, the 9.7-inch model has a higher density screen than its smaller counterpart.

Chronic Dev-Team member Joshua Hill has just confirmed that the new Greenpois0n jailbreak, which will allow you to jailbreak Apple’s latest iOS 4.1 software, is expected to be released this Sunday. To make the event more special, Dev-Team has decided to launch the tool at 10 past 10 AM on October 10th 2010. They will be releasing multiple tools, some of which will help you update to 4.1 without losing the possibility of unlocking your baseband for other carriers.

Apple's iPad coming to all U.S. Mercedes-Benz dealers

After a successful iPad pilot program with 40 dealerships this summer, Mercedes-Benz decided to expand its iPad program to all 355 U.S. dealerships this fall. The "overwhelmingly positive" results from the test program were surprising, said vice president of marketing Andreas Hinrichs. "The feedback was so positive." Dealers use the iPad to apply for loans and fill out paperwork keeping customers on the showroom floor. Although the test program did not provide conclusive evidence that buyers are more willing to purchase a vehicle if they stay in the showroom, Mercedes-Benz made its decision.
