FBI Paid $900,000 to Unlock San Bernardino Shooter’s iPhone





As it turns out, the Federal Bureau of Investigation paid over $900,000 to obtain tools required to unlock the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone. The information comes from a senator Dianne Feinstein, so we can believe it for sure. The details were shared during an oversight hearing where the senator was questioning FBI director James Comey,  The Associated Press reports.

Apple May Ditch Touch ID in iPhone 8 – Analyst



According to the latest report from Andy Hargreaves, equity research analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, the iPhone 8 may lack the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. Apple has troubles with integrating the sensor under iPhone’s display, and this may lead either to a complete switch to 3D sensing technology that will be capable of recognizing the user with his face, or a delay in the OLED iPhone 8 production.

You Can Bypass Facial Recognition System on Galaxy S8 Using Photo



Earlier this week, Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus that feature edge-to-edge AMOLED displays and a bunch of new sensors including the face scanner. Today, a video appeared on the Internet showing the lock screen bypassed using a photo of the registered user of the phone.

A firm called ColorWare has created a new custom iPhone 7 Plus model called the iPhone 7 Plus Retro Edition. The device is the unlocked 256GB iPhone 7 Plus with a colorful Apple logo on the back panel and the paint color reminiscent of old Macintosh computers from 1980s. There’re also several stripes on the sides of the device, they resemble cooling vents of old computers. The price of this custom-made iPhone is $1899.

Galaxy S8 to Get Both Iris Scanner and Facial Recognition System



According to the latest report from the Korea Economic Daily, Samsung will add the support for facial recognition to the Galaxy S8. The main reasons for adding this feature are speed and readability of the iris scanner that may not be comfortable for all users. Apple's upcoming flagship, the iPhone 8, may also get both authentication systems as well as Apple is planning to either stop using the fingerprint scanner or place it under glass after removing the Home button.

Samsung to Pay Apple $119.6 Million for Infringing on ‘Slide to Unlock’ Patent



Apple has won an appeal in the court case against its South Korean rival Samsung over the ‘slide to unlock’ patent. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that Samsung is guilty and has to pay Apple $119.6 million for infringing on its patents. Home Button on iPhone 7 Requires Skin Contact to Work



As it turns out, the Home button on the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus requires skin contact to work. What this means is that if you cover the Touch ID sensor embedded to the button with any material and try to unlock the phone or use the button for any other purpose - it won’t work. While at first this doesn’t appear to be a big problem, it actually is.
