iOS 6 Maps Hacked To Work On iPhone 4
As we reported earlier this week, some iOS 6 features will not be compatible with all iDevices. Among these features are new turn-by-turn navigation and Flyover that are not supported on the iPhone 4 and older devices.
But according to videos posted by Russian site iGuides, Flyover and 3D maps can properly work on a jailbroken iPhone 4. After digging in the firmware, an iOS developer Anton Titkov has managed to get these feature working on the iPhone 4 and has even posted instructions for enabling these functions.
Apple has constantly placed restrictions on certain functions of its iOS release, based in part on how well older devices work with the specific features. However, in some cases like Siri on the iPhone 4S, these restrictions have more to do with marketing and differentiation.
But it seems that 3D map performance on the iPhone 4 and older devices simply doesn’t satisfy Apple’s requirements and they has decided not to officially support this functionality on that hardware.
Regardless of the reasons behind Apple’s restrictions on mapping functionality, developers and hackers will continue trying to circumvent those limitations, and we might see other features to come to older Apple hardware for those wanting to enable them on their devices.
