Yesterday there was a release of PWNage 2.0. Now version 2.0.1 is avaliable.

Here is the list of bugfixes:

• It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer
• It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
• Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
• The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.

Because of the AppCast URL fix, we recommend that everyone who downloaded PwnageTool 2.0 get this version, if they want to stay up to date automatically.

If PwnageTool 2.0 pwned your phone correctly the first time, you do not need to pwn again with 2.0.1.

AT&T provides an online tool to find a Wi-Fi spot near you.

This is about Wi-Fi spots in the US. AT&T has access (company-owned, branded and roaming) to over 70,000 Wi-Fi hotsport in 89 countries and 389 airports.

Update:

Unfortunately, everyone got too excited over nothing - the Wi-Fi is still not available, and the “document” was a mistake. Here is an email from one of their spokespeople:

• We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone. The webpage was posted in error and is being removed. Wi-Fi is a real differentiator for AT&T and it is our intention to make it available to as many customers as possible, but we have no announcement at this time.

DevTeam is working hard to release their PwnageTool 2.0. Today it became clear what it will be able to do:

• iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

• iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

• iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with  support for third party applications).

So no unlock for IPhone 3G. But, they promise to create the next version with support of unlock, bootneuter and etc for IPhone 3G. It just will take some time.

Our comments:

5. No voice dialing

There is do such feature. But.. There is an application called VoiceDial. For old jailbreaked IPhones it is possible to install via Installer. For the new IPhone 3G VoiceDial is avaliable through AppStore. By the way it is not free, cost is about $30.

4. No cut and paste

Indeed, not in IPhone or IPhone 3G for now. But, read this.

3. Can't use as a modem

That is a problem. No such feature. And there will be no such feature in the future.

2. No multimedia messaging

There is an application called SwirlyMMS - works well. Costs $8, works well on old IPhones.

1. Locked up

Not only this. It is not possible to buy IPhone 3G without a contract. We'll wait for an unlock and sells without a contract.

The battery life on Apple's new 3G iPhone isn't great, but it beats that of other 3G smartphones we've seen, say testers at PC World's Test Center. In the study's standard talk-time battery life test, an iPhone, on average, ran 5 hours and 38 minutes, a performance PC World deems "fair."

The original iPhone, which ran on AT&T's slower EDGE network, lasted 10 hours of our test. But the 3G iPhone beat out the rest of the current 3G smartphone pack, most of which fell shy of the five-hour mark that's the cutoff between a word score of fair and poor in PC World's performance ratings.

The iPhone 3G also beat out competitors on Sprint and Verizon's EVDO mobile broadband networks, including the Palm Centro (4:19) and the Samsung Instinct (5:33), PC World says.

During an interview to AppScout Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president, described that there is a priority list for IPhone's functionality. And the copy/paste is there. It will be developed, it's just a matter of time.

Some news about GPS. For now there is no such functionality to receive instructions where to go in real time. David Poga from New York Times thinks this is because of a small GPS receiver antenna inside IPhone. Joswiak doesn't agree with that. He assumes that GPS module is quite competitive and is just like GPS modules in many other phones. This technical problem will be fixed quite soon, probably by some software from other company.

How the new IPhone 3G passes stress tests? Put it in your pocket, scratch it with a key, drop it into your soup, wash it with a soap, drop it several times and cross it with a motorcycle. Don't want to do it? PCWorld did that, take a look:

Here are the news from Apple: "When the iPhone 3G goes on sale tomorrow, more than 500 native applications will be available on the revolutionary new App Store — including more than 125 free applications."

But the applications are already there!! Because in some parts of the world it is already July 11. And what is great, there are many free applications. For example, Remote, AIM, Google Mobile, NYTimes, Myspace Mobile.

Users can download applications directly from new IPhones or through iTunes.

The special version for IPhone was launched recently. This is a very nice online web client for poplular instant messanger Google Talk. The link is www.google.com/talk.

There was an application called Apollo IM. It worked, but didn't work good - it hanged, dropeed connections, exited for no reason. Later there was MobileChat, which version 2.23-2 was much better than Apollo. It did work. It leasе I used it with ICQ many times. However it didn't have history and there were some problems with offline cyrillic messages.

Now there is AgileMessenger. It is quite popular, because it supports many phones (not just smartphones). Now it is avaliable for IPhone. The interface is good. Users can chat, send pictures, there is history. And history is saved even when you restart an application. There is even a traffic meter.

Apple recently filed a new patent application (us20080122796ki). On more than 370 pages lots of new potential features and enhancements for IPhone’s hardware and software are described.

The most interesting Hardware part is a GPS receiver and a camera for video conferencing.

On a software level, Apple describes addition of a text messaging (chat), in-line multimedia content (Quicktime and Flash) in the Safari browser. Further welcome additions described in the publication would include a dedicated blogging client, Java software downloads, MMS picture and video messaging, support for voice-activated commands, audio capture, video conferencing and more.

It sounds like Apple wants Java to be on the IPhone

Here are some extracts from JavaOne 2008 conference press-releases about Java for IPhone:

"To show Java's prominence in multimedia, rock icon Neil Young made an appearance onstage to promote his video and music catalog offering based on Java and Blu-ray technology. A Sun official also briefly commented on Sun's predicament in trying to put Java on the Apple iPhone, leaving the ball in Apple's court to help make that happen."

"During the post-keynote press conference, Green gave a progress report on Sun's ongoing quest to put Java on the iPhone, something that Apple has not publicly, at least, supported.

Sun, Green said, is well along its way in creating the technology to enable Java to run on the phone, Green said. But he deferred to Apple, which governs which platforms can be distributed with the iPhone. It is Apple's right to decide this, Schwartz added."

There are two ways to enable Java applications run on the IPhone. The first one is to port Java to IPhone, and this is preferrable The second way is to create automatic Java to IPhone porting solution for individual applications.

A company called Innaworks announced an interesting product called alcheMo. alcheMo is an automated system to port J2ME application to a native platform such as BREW and IPhone.

alcheMo technology is basically J2ME to C++ translator and the run-time library. It converts Java application to C++ application, which can be compiled, run and debugged. Using native run-time libraries the native executable is created. The alcheMo run-time library provides equivalent functionality to those associated with J2ME, including support for automatic garbage collection, multi-threading and extensive subsets of CLDC 1.1 and MIDP 2.0, and extension JSRs.

There are several examples of porting games to BREW platform. Hopefully there will be some for the IPhone in the near future. For now alcheMo is in beta state, potential developers are invited to join.

By the way, alcheMo for iPhone supports the accelerometer, the touch screen and other unique iPhone features, through standard MIDP 2.0 API, JSR-256, and, where necessary, extension APIs. If J2ME application uses such APIs, it will automatically and immediately be accelerometer or touch screen capable on iPhone.

Eric Klein, vice president of Sun Microsystems, Java Marketing anounced that Sun will be developing a Java VM for the Apple's IPhone. This JVM will be based on Java Micro Edition and will allow IPhone to launch thousands of existing and new Java applications. "Once our JVM is on the phone, we anticipate that a large number of Java applications would run on the phone," Klein said. It took 24 hours for Sun to analyze the licence and information Apple had provided with IPhone's SDK. Release date is planned some time after June 2008.
