Apple uses a jailbroken iPhone in patent application

Recently we talked about Apple's second patent about biometric security. The funny thing is that the images used in this patent show a jailbroken firmware 1.x iPhone, with installed Installer.app, SMBPrefs  and the iWood Realize theme from the iSpazio repository. There are also "Terminal", "Game", "VRecord", "Blocks" and others.

Wolfenstein [Games, Cydia]

The original Wolfenstein is now available for free for the iPhone. You need to jailbreak your phone to get in on the fun. The game is truly a classic. This is a first-person shooter in which we should govern our character among many doors and endless mazes. The controls are "fairly" good, based solely on the touch screen.

Wolf3D avaliable from Cydia, repository ZodTTD.

Polar coordinates clock for the iPhone [AppStore, Free]

PolarClock is the official polar coordinates clock for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It has arcs which extend from 0 degrees to 360 degrees as the interval (i.e. hour, min, sec) extends. The arcs reset once they reach the end of the arctic interval. It's an interesting and unique way to visualize the time and the moon!

This app is avaliable via AppStore (link). The price is $0.99. There is also a free app called Arctic Clock (link), which provides similar functionality.

You can download PolarClock as a desktop screensaver: Mac OS X 4.4Mb, Windows 2.0Mb.

iPhones and iPods Banned at Gates' Home

bg

This month's Vogue has a great interview with Mrs. Bill Gates, the lovely philanthropist Melinda Gates. The interview focuses on the Microsoft founder's better half, but there's a fun Apple rivalry moment in the piece, when the subject of the couples' kids is brought up. She says: "There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids." Gates does admit to being swayed — a little— by Apple's smartphone, though: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone'."
