New Version of Google Mobile iPhone App Features Added "Ninja"

We don't have an explanation for this, but the new version of the Google Mobile App for iPhone/iPod Touch lists some pretty wacky improvements, notably "Longer Version Number" and "Ninja." This screen can be seen in the "Update Details" section of the app. We hope some fun-loving Google employee didn't just get fired for his ninja-humor-based initiative.

Video Recording, voice control and compass in future iPhone

It looks like the iPhone will record video this summer. Buried in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta is this screenshot of what's obviously the iPhone's still dormant video recording interface. Besides the honking red record button in the center, there's a toggle to switch between the still camera and video recording. Inside the configuration files where the screen was discovered were mentions of an "auto-focus camera," "magnetometer" (digital compass), and "Voice Control."

Star Guitar [AppStore, Video]
Lisa and Toyo demonstrate the Star Guitar iPhone app (AppStore ). You can play back synth guitar versions of popular songs by just tapping on chord buttons on your iPhone. What makes this video is the composition and the editing. It is amazing. Seriously, just watch it.

iPhone's Wallpaper with notes and calendar events [AppStore, Free]

Wallpaper Labeler (AppStore ) and gCalWall Lite (AppStore ) let you add appointments and notes to the home screen. With Wallpaper Labeler, you can enter any text you want to your wallpaper, so you can leave yourself (or whoever finds your phone) notes. The other app, gCalWall, pulls down upcoming appointments from your default Google Calendar and splays them all over your home screen. You have to update it manually, which is kind of a drag, but the dev says that iPhone API won't allow for automatic updating. Both apps are free
In the past you could only use Intelliscreen paid app on a jailbreaked iPhone.

iChange car concept

The Rinspeed iChange is an electric car concept promising 0-60 in four seconds along with a transforming rear end that can create two extra seats. And an iPhone controls everything but the driving parts. The dash features an iPhone dock, and as you can see, there really aren't many other buttons—heck, there's not even a slot for the key. So the iPhone is used to turn on the car, control the Harman/Kardon infotainment system with GPS navigation, and, we believe, even handle the air conditioning complete with vents.

iPhone App Store vs the Android Marketplace
Medialets have put together a comparison of the iPhone App Store and the Android Marketplace after the first 24 hours. There is nothing really Earth-shattering in the data, but it does provide some insight into the similarities between iPhone and G1 users. Basically, it illustrates that both parties are interested in the same sorts of apps, given the fact that the distributions are fairly similar.

iPhone 3G in China - no 3G, no WiFi?

According to the South China Morning Post, the carrier wants Apple to supply a custom version of the iPhone which disables both W-CDMA (3G) and Wi-Fi. China Mobile doesn't yet have a 3G network in place and is afraid that customers will buy the iPhone and unlock it for use on more capable networks. This explains the lock-out for 3G, but killing the Wi-Fi is just spiteful.
Given that Apple ships an identical iPhone to every other world market, it's doubtful that China Mobile will get its way. But then, no other world market has a potential customer base of two billion people. If these functions are disabled, it will most likely be done in software.
