DevTeam about firmware 2.2

DevTeam says that 2.2 update SHOULD NOT be applied using iTunes if you want the chance of a soft-unlock in the near future. Use new version of PwnageTool (not avaliable yet, but will be soon).

Some fact:

  • The 2.2 firmware for 3G contains a baseband update for the 3G iPhone
  • The 2.2 firmware for 2G (1st gen iPhones) doesn’t contain a baseband update and the baseband is still at 04.05.04
  • Pwnage technique (and therefore the Jailbreak) isn’t affected, but PwnageTool and QuickPwn do not support this release as yet, so DO NOT install 2.2 using iTunes as you will lose your jailbreak

Installer 4.0b5 is out

Installer 4.0 beta 5 is avaliable now.

What's new:

  • Many visual enhancements and fixes in regards to source and packages display.
  • Fixed an issue with failing installs with dependencies under some circumstances.
  • Fixed a bug causing package information to be displayed incorrectly (size 0 bytes) on the first access, or when the custom information HTML page (such as packages from Big Boss' repository) was not displayed.
  • When updating a package, and one of its dependencies also has an update available, the dependency will be updated as well.
  • The package icons will only be downloaded when on the Wi-Fi to help you save on bandwidth.
  • The repositories are being refreshed upon Installer.app launch so you always stay on the bleeding edge with the updates. This is exeperimental behavior and we're not yet sure it will make it to the final release.
  • Fixed a script command Confirm that was returning invalid button index for the "OK" button.
  • Lots and lots of both cosmetic and internal application core fixes that improve the overall performance, presentation and stability of the application.

Community Sources package is updated. It now includes a repository for modmyifone.com (lot's of stuff there) and iphone-notes.de (BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH), as well as numerous carrier bundles and other useful stuff.

iTunes U: university lectures for free

At Apple's iTunes online store, Britney Spears and Shakespeare are separated by just a few clicks. While an episode of "Desperate Housewives" will cost $1.99, a series of lectures by renowned University of California-Berkeley philosophy professor Hubert Dreyfus is absolutely free. A single song by pop diva Rihanna is 99 cents. The price of a course on modern theoretical physics by Stanford University quantum mechanics professor Leonard Susskind? Free!!!.

Apple calls it iTunes U, an unsung but popular feature of iTunes. Audio and video downloads of classroom lectures are available to anyone who wants to listen to them through a computer or an iPod. Though the program has existed on a smaller scale for a few years, it now offers more than 50,000 audio and video tracks - course lectures, language lessons, speeches - from scores of universities and colleges. Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Yale are there. Beginning in the fall, both UC-Berkeley and Stanford are planning expansions to their respective digital lecture programs.

Go to iTunes U in the iTunes Store.
