Now older IPhone users users can upgrade to firmware 2.0 and IPhone 3G users have a possibility to have jailbreaked IPhones. That is because PwnageTool 2.0 is released today. Download links are: mirror1, mirror2, mirror3.

Just a reminder: this tool jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. No unlock for Iphone 3G yet. The supported firmware is 2.0 only. Platform is Mac OS.

If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to repare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ;  if that directory already exists, remove any files in it.  Then re-run PwnageTool.

Reminder: as of right now, there are no apps out for 2.0. Over the next few days some will come out. So do not update yet if you have some favorite 1.1.x apps you are using! 2.0 will not run 1.1.4 apps

5. No voice dialing

There is do such feature. But.. There is an application called VoiceDial. For old jailbreaked IPhones it is possible to install via Installer. For the new IPhone 3G VoiceDial is avaliable through AppStore. By the way it is not free, cost is about $30.

4. No cut and paste

Indeed, not in IPhone or IPhone 3G for now. But, read this.

3. Can't use as a modem

That is a problem. No such feature. And there will be no such feature in the future.

2. No multimedia messaging

There is an application called SwirlyMMS - works well. Costs $8, works well on old IPhones.

1. Locked up

Not only this. It is not possible to buy IPhone 3G without a contract. We'll wait for an unlock and sells without a contract.

During WWDC 2008 keynote Steve Jobs compared EDGE and 3G by downloading the same site in Safari on both old and new IPhones. Guys from CNet performed similar testing:

The results are 31 seconds with IPhone 3G and 53 seconds with old IPhone (EDGE). Quite impressive.

PS: By the way. They said "I'm done" a bit slow. Progress bars were done in 29 and 49 seconds correspondingly.

Engadget published a video about IPhone 3G. They start with opening the box and continue with launching the applications and using GPS. Take a look:

ВумЕуфь published another interesting video - IPhone with firmware version 2.0 unlocked and fully working. Itunes and Cydia Installer is just fine with 2.0.

DevTeam recently published a video of working PwnageTool 2.0 - for unlocking, activating and jailbreaking IPhne fimware, that will work with the new firmware 2.0.

"Many many hours have gone into this and now it should be as easy enough for your grandmother to use. We’ve added lots of new features, including 2.0 support, spotlight file indexing of .ipsws, canned websearches, installer custom configuration, custom root partitions and various other things that you’ll see on the release. Release date is soon although not this weekend. So check out the video, hopefully it will hold you off until we release."

PwnageTool works with 2.0 upgraded 1st gen (!) iPhones if they are activated or not.

Apple recently filed a new patent application (us20080122796ki). On more than 370 pages lots of new potential features and enhancements for IPhone’s hardware and software are described.

The most interesting Hardware part is a GPS receiver and a camera for video conferencing.

On a software level, Apple describes addition of a text messaging (chat), in-line multimedia content (Quicktime and Flash) in the Safari browser. Further welcome additions described in the publication would include a dedicated blogging client, Java software downloads, MMS picture and video messaging, support for voice-activated commands, audio capture, video conferencing and more.

“[0142]Examples of other applications 136 that may be stored in memory 102 include other word processing applications, JAVA-enabled applications, encryption, digital rights management, voice recognition, and voice replication. ”

It sounds like Apple wants Java to be on the IPhone

Here are some extracts from JavaOne 2008 conference press-releases about Java for IPhone:

"To show Java's prominence in multimedia, rock icon Neil Young made an appearance onstage to promote his video and music catalog offering based on Java and Blu-ray technology. A Sun official also briefly commented on Sun's predicament in trying to put Java on the Apple iPhone, leaving the ball in Apple's court to help make that happen."

"During the post-keynote press conference, Green gave a progress report on Sun's ongoing quest to put Java on the iPhone, something that Apple has not publicly, at least, supported.

Sun, Green said, is well along its way in creating the technology to enable Java to run on the phone, Green said. But he deferred to Apple, which governs which platforms can be distributed with the iPhone. It is Apple's right to decide this, Schwartz added."

Eric Klein, vice president of Sun Microsystems, Java Marketing anounced that Sun will be developing a Java VM for the Apple's IPhone. This JVM will be based on Java Micro Edition and will allow IPhone to launch thousands of existing and new Java applications. "Once our JVM is on the phone, we anticipate that a large number of Java applications would run on the phone," Klein said. It took 24 hours for Sun to analyze the licence and information Apple had provided with IPhone's SDK. Release date is planned some time after June 2008.
