With the iPhone 3G not even ten days old, virtually all of the Apple retail store stores open within the United States are without any examples of the device to sell on July 21st.

The shortage is severe enough in the 38 states that claim Apple stores that it's easier to count the locations that do have iPhone 3G units than those that don't.

In California, the only Apple store with any iPhones is the Pleasanton store with only 16GB black examples, while New York City's Fifth Avenue store is the only one in all of New York state known to have any examples left, with just 16GB white models in stock.

Only a single Honolulu store and the Salem, New Hampshire store can also claim to have any units available, and each only lists one model as ready for Monday.

Apple has been continually resupplying its stores with new iPhones - in many cases on a daily basis - but has seen fewer and fewer of its stores touting next-day availability in the several days since the July 11th debut of the handset upgrade.

Whether or not Apple's supply will meet demand in time to prevent a repeat of May's complete stockout is also far from certain. When grilled on an unprecedented spike in preorders, Britain's iPhone carrier O2 said it might take "some weeks" before it could satisfy enough of its customers on a regular basis.

Here are the updates:

• JocStrap - Java/Objective-C connection library, version 1.0.2466-17 (was 1.0.2466-15),
• IPhone/Java - examples of Java applications, version 1.0.2474-15 (was 1.0.2357-14)
• Cydia Installer, version 1.0.2473-64 (was 1.0.2460-59)

Yesterday there was a release of PWNage 2.0. Now version 2.0.1 is avaliable.

Here is the list of bugfixes:

• It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer
• It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
• Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
• The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.

Because of the AppCast URL fix, we recommend that everyone who downloaded PwnageTool 2.0 get this version, if they want to stay up to date automatically.

If PwnageTool 2.0 pwned your phone correctly the first time, you do not need to pwn again with 2.0.1.

Now older IPhone users users can upgrade to firmware 2.0 and IPhone 3G users have a possibility to have jailbreaked IPhones. That is because PwnageTool 2.0 is released today. Download links are: mirror1, mirror2, mirror3.

Just a reminder: this tool jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. No unlock for Iphone 3G yet. The supported firmware is 2.0 only. Platform is Mac OS.

If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to repare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ;  if that directory already exists, remove any files in it.  Then re-run PwnageTool.

Reminder: as of right now, there are no apps out for 2.0. Over the next few days some will come out. So do not update yet if you have some favorite 1.1.x apps you are using! 2.0 will not run 1.1.4 apps

This is about Wi-Fi spots in the US. AT&T has access (company-owned, branded and roaming) to over 70,000 Wi-Fi hotsport in 89 countries and 389 airports.

Update:

Unfortunately, everyone got too excited over nothing - the Wi-Fi is still not available, and the “document” was a mistake. Here is an email from one of their spokespeople:

• We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone. The webpage was posted in error and is being removed. Wi-Fi is a real differentiator for AT&T and it is our intention to make it available to as many customers as possible, but we have no announcement at this time.

IPhone and IPhone3G do not support A2DP technology. Now they do

Apple's added the "Books" category to the AppStore, and has moved the e-books released by AppEngines and others there. Most of them cost $0.99. There are 115 books avaliable.

DevTeam is working hard to release their PwnageTool 2.0. Today it became clear what it will be able to do:

• iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

• iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

• iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with  support for third party applications).

So no unlock for IPhone 3G. But, they promise to create the next version with support of unlock, bootneuter and etc for IPhone 3G. It just will take some time.

There is do such feature. But.. There is an application called VoiceDial. For old jailbreaked IPhones it is possible to install via Installer. For the new IPhone 3G VoiceDial is avaliable through AppStore. By the way it is not free, cost is about $30.

4. No cut and paste

Indeed, not in IPhone or IPhone 3G for now. But, read this.

3. Can't use as a modem

That is a problem. No such feature. And there will be no such feature in the future.

There is an application called SwirlyMMS - works well. Costs $8, works well on old IPhones.

Not only this. It is not possible to buy IPhone 3G without a contract. We'll wait for an unlock and sells without a contract.

During WWDC 2008 keynote Steve Jobs compared EDGE and 3G by downloading the same site in Safari on both old and new IPhones. Guys from CNet performed similar testing:

The results are 31 seconds with IPhone 3G and 53 seconds with old IPhone (EDGE). Quite impressive.

PS: By the way. They said "I'm done" a bit slow. Progress bars were done in 29 and 49 seconds correspondingly.

Pinchmedia provided new report of prices for IPhone application in AppStore. The percentage of applications that are free is falling. However competition among paid applications is leading to price cuts - the most common price is $0.99. Almost 69% of paid applications are now $4.99 or less. $9.99 remains the second-most popular price. As of this morning, Pinch Media tracked 798 applications in the AppStore - 161 (20.2%) free, 637 (79.8%) paid.

The battery life on Apple's new 3G iPhone isn't great, but it beats that of other 3G smartphones we've seen, say testers at PC World's Test Center. In the study's standard talk-time battery life test, an iPhone, on average, ran 5 hours and 38 minutes, a performance PC World deems "fair."

The original iPhone, which ran on AT&T's slower EDGE network, lasted 10 hours of our test. But the 3G iPhone beat out the rest of the current 3G smartphone pack, most of which fell shy of the five-hour mark that's the cutoff between a word score of fair and poor in PC World's performance ratings.

The iPhone 3G also beat out competitors on Sprint and Verizon's EVDO mobile broadband networks, including the Palm Centro (4:19) and the Samsung Instinct (5:33), PC World says.
