Nearly one billion apps have been downloaded around the globe.

Apple celebrates this event: download an app and you’ll automatically get the chance to win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Just go to the iTunes Store, browse the App Store, and download your best app yet.

The University of Stanford created an iPhone related course for iTunes U. The first lesson will help developers to create iPhone applications, almost from scratch.

The course is obviously in English, and videos are posted about 2 days after the actual recording. The quality is very good, and we can even download the slides in PDF. To get started, just click here. And... yes, it is free.

Apple updated iTunes to version 8.1.1. Official changelog is: "iTunes 8.1.1 adds support for renting HD movies and provides a number of bug fixes, including addressing issues with VoiceOver and syncing with iPhone or iPod touch.". Download it here.

GigaOM reports that an iPhone version of Skype may be released as soon as next week, possibly at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas.

A few months ago, I asked Skype CEO Josh Silverman when was he going to launch the iPhone version of the P2P voice and IM service that has now been downloaded more than 405 million times. He smiled and said, "Stay tuned." And so we did.

A tipster, a very reliable one, tells me that Skype is almost ready to launch that iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week. CTIA Wireless, a large mobile industry trade event, kicks off in Las Vegas next Wednesday, so perhaps the announcement will be made there. I am working on getting more details, as well as screenshots of the service.

For now we can use Fring, which is free and works just fine.

This tool allows you to install the OpeniBoot on iPhone and iPod Touch. This offers the possibility of using the Linux console on our Apple devices. Once the code is installed we will be able to choose whether to enter iPhone OS or start the Linux console. The file to install the OpeniBoot can only be run on Linux or Mac. But there will be a package for Windows users soon.

Saurik annound today the new Cydia Store at the 360|iDev Event. Here is an email from him:

"The cydia store was officially announced today: should be out Friday and will have one simple package available, followed by more over the next few weeks."

This Store will provide an easier way to download paid apps already avaiable in Cydia at this moment (iPhone video recorder, SwirlyMMS, QuickSMS, iRealSMS etc).

PolarClock is the official polar coordinates clock for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It has arcs which extend from 0 degrees to 360 degrees as the interval (i.e. hour, min, sec) extends. The arcs reset once they reach the end of the arctic interval. It's an interesting and unique way to visualize the time and the moon!

This app is avaliable via AppStore (link). The price is $0.99. There is also a free app called Arctic Clock (link), which provides similar functionality.

Abai is a new application that will allow us to play chess for free on our iPhone or iPod Touch. There are some cool features, like flip or movements suggestion. Nice game for chess fans. You can download abai via Cydia (repository BigBoss).

Classic game with very good graphics, 28 levels of arcade excitement! The game will be free for 7 days starting from Feb 20. Later it will be $1.99, so we suggest to download now. Here is an AppStore link.

SouthPark app was rejected by Apple. The developers found the solution. Now it is avaliable via Cydia for jailbreaked iPhones. It is called SouthPark Mobile.

New iPhone voice recorder travels back in time. A new iPhone app enables users to record speech after it's already been said.

That sounds impossible, but Epiphany is programmed quite cleverly. The moment you launch the app, it's already recording. But it doesn't store the recording until you tap the "Remember that!" button. In the app's settings, you can set how far back you want to record clips (e.g., 30 seconds or 2 minutes).

This will be extremely useful in a number of ways. For example, imagine you're a journalist and you're interviewing a person who rambles a ton but says something interesting once every 10 minutes or so.
