5 reasons to hate the IPhone 3G

Our comments:

5. No voice dialing

There is do such feature. But.. There is an application called VoiceDial. For old jailbreaked IPhones it is possible to install via Installer. For the new IPhone 3G VoiceDial is avaliable through AppStore. By the way it is not free, cost is about $30.

4. No cut and paste

Indeed, not in IPhone or IPhone 3G for now. But, read this.

3. Can't use as a modem

That is a problem. No such feature. And there will be no such feature in the future.

UODATE: Get internet on a desktop or notebook through IPhone 3G

2. No multimedia messaging

There is an application called SwirlyMMS - works well. Costs $8, works well on old IPhones.

1. Locked up

Not only this. It is not possible to buy IPhone 3G without a contract. We'll wait for an unlock and sells without a contract.

EDGE vs 3G

During WWDC 2008 keynote Steve Jobs compared EDGE and 3G by downloading the same site in Safari on both old and new IPhones. Guys from CNet performed similar testing:

The results are 31 seconds with IPhone 3G and 53 seconds with old IPhone (EDGE). Quite impressive.

PS: By the way. They said "I'm done" a bit slow. Progress bars were done in 29 and 49 seconds correspondingly.

IPhone application pricing update

Pinchmedia provided new report of prices for IPhone application in AppStore. The percentage of applications that are free is falling. However competition among paid applications is leading to price cuts - the most common price is $0.99. Almost 69% of paid applications are now $4.99 or less. $9.99 remains the second-most popular price. As of this morning, Pinch Media tracked 798 applications in the AppStore - 161 (20.2%) free, 637 (79.8%) paid.

Here are the results:

Compare them with the ones, that were presented a week ago just after the AppStore opening: IPhone application price.

3G SmartPhone Battery Life: iPhone Leads

The battery life on Apple's new 3G iPhone isn't great, but it beats that of other 3G smartphones we've seen, say testers at PC World's Test Center. In the study's standard talk-time battery life test, an iPhone, on average, ran 5 hours and 38 minutes, a performance PC World deems "fair."

The original iPhone, which ran on AT&T's slower EDGE network, lasted 10 hours of our test. But the 3G iPhone beat out the rest of the current 3G smartphone pack, most of which fell shy of the five-hour mark that's the cutoff between a word score of fair and poor in PC World's performance ratings.

The iPhone 3G also beat out competitors on Sprint and Verizon's EVDO mobile broadband networks, including the Palm Centro (4:19) and the Samsung Instinct (5:33), PC World says.

Copy/paste on IPhone

During an interview to AppScout Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president, described that there is a priority list for IPhone's functionality. And the copy/paste is there. It will be developed, it's just a matter of time.

Some news about GPS. For now there is no such functionality to receive instructions where to go in real time. David Poga from New York Times thinks this is because of a small GPS receiver antenna inside IPhone. Joswiak doesn't agree with that. He assumes that GPS module is quite competitive and is just like GPS modules in many other phones. This technical problem will be fixed quite soon, probably by some software from other company.

Firmware 2.0 is just released and we are all waiting for 2.1 :-)

IPhone 3G stress test

How the new IPhone 3G passes stress tests? Put it in your pocket, scratch it with a key, drop it into your soup, wash it with a soap, drop it several times and cross it with a motorcycle. Don't want to do it? PCWorld did that, take a look:

1 Million IPhone 3Gs sold

On Sunday, Apple sold its one millionth iPhone 3G, the company announced today. "iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world".

During its first weekend, iPhone and iPod touch customers downloaded more than 10 million applications from the new App Store. The groundbreaking App Store now has more than 800 native applications, including over 200 offered for free and more than 90 percent available for less than $10.

More IPhone 3G internals photos

Portelligent and Semiconductor Insights published a document describing interals of IPhone 3G. Techonline described the details. (Previous IPhone 3G internals photos can be viewed here)

Commuunications (3G/GSM) are on Infineon chips. One for GSM/GPRS/EDGE, another for WCDMA/HSDPA (3G). GPS module is not SiRF as we all thought. Apple uses PMB 2525 Hammerhead II. The Hammerhead II integrates an assisted-GPS (A-GPS) baseband processor with a low-noise GPS RF front end and multi-path mitigation to avoid large errors in urban environments.

Free vs paid IPhone applications by category

Pinchmedia recently announced new report regarding IPhone applications (take a look at the previous one here). They counted free and paid applications in each category. Guess what the results are:

News and social networking are disproportionately free, since it's difficult to charge for content that's freely available elsewhere and social networks grow in value with the number of participants. Entertainment and games are disproportionately paid, reflecting a belief that people will pay money to have fun. Since the AppStore's applications are disproportionately entertainment and games (helped along by a lot of $0.99 e-books), the AppStore's applications are predominantly paid. The most common price for an application in the 'games' category is still $9.99, although the second-most common price is $1.99.
