Yesterday we posted first info about iPhone 2,1. PinchMedia follows up with what few details they have about the usage of the device.

- 1st spotting of the "iPhone 2,1" device occured in early October 2008
- Usage picked up in mid-December 2008
- A few dozen distinct "iPhone 2,1" devices have been detected
- Almost exclusively located in south San Francisco Bay Area
- Both AT&T and Wi-Fi connections

PinchMedia provides iPhone developers with ad serving and analytic tracking software to embed within iPhone applications. This is how the the iPhone 2,1 devices have been detected.

MacRumors has discovered that iPhone's firmware has evidence of the next generation iPhone which has been designated "iPhone2,1". This new model number can be found in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist in an unencrypted firmware.

Apple uses these models numbers to distinguish between different hardware models. The original iPhone carries the model number of "iPhone 1,1" while the 3G iPhone is labeled "iPhone 1,2". These numbers do not change for simple storage increases and instead represent functionally different devices. Similarly, the iPod Touch was originally introduced as the "iPod 1,1" and the most recent hardware revision was labeled "iPod2,1".

Meanwhile, at least one developer has noticed actual "iPhone2,1" models in use based on PinchMedia ad serving reports.

Jim Dalrymple at Macworld notes that the iPhone software update from Monday was mostly to handle issues with dropped calls on new iPhone 3G handsets. According to an Associated Press article, the update "improved communication with 3G networks," said Apple spokesperson Jennifer Bowcock.

However, some Macworld commenters are saying the update hasn't helped with dropped calls, even in areas with a strong signal.

What's more, according to an AppleInsider rumor, another update is scheduled for September that addresses an issue where non-default applications will repeatedly crash. A tipster claims to have received a Steveogram saying the issue "is a known iPhone bug that is being fixed in the next software update in September."

ZDNet Australia reports that banking "giant" HSBC is considering ditching the BlackBerry and switching over to the iPhone for its staff. HSBC has about 300,000 staff worldwide and this transition could result in 200,000 iPhone orders.

"We are actually reviewing iPhones from a HSBC Group perspective ... and when I say that, I mean globally," HSBC's Australia and New Zealand chief information officer Brenton Hush told ZDNet.com.au yesterday.

United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) just released a large document detailing "Touch Screen Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Determining Commands by Applying Heuristics".  There are lots and lots of information in this patent (#20080174570) but only one particular section that really caught my eye.  It has to do with one feature many of us have been wishing for on the iPhone --- support for Flash content.

The content from this patent doesn't say whether Apple will add support for Flash to future versions of iPhone OS 2.0, but it does tell us that Apple has most definitely considered it.  And as an added bonus, we may even see native support for Windows Media content.

There is a chance that copy/paste feature will be implemented in firmware version 2.1. Apple already mentioned that copy/paste will be, the question was when.

Some curious developer found the following within the English-language 'Localizable.strings' file located in 'System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit.framework':

Therefore, it's unclear whether those references represent the groundwork for upcoming iPhone features or simply exists as carryovers from the WebKit frameworks used to develop applications for the Mac and Windows PCs.

Investment bank Piper Jaffray said Tuesday it believes Apple is readying new iPod and notebook products that will apply downward pressure to profit margins because they'll be priced more affordably, such as 13-inch MacBook that will fetch less than $1000.

"We believe there is an 80% chance Apple will introduce redesigned MacBooks and possibly new MacBook Pros at lower price points," he wrote. "Specifically, Apple may re-enter the $999 price point (currently $1099) with the MacBook, or test the $1,799 price point with the MacBook Pro (currently $1999)."

The Piper Jaffray analyst reiterated his Buy rating and $250 price target on shares of Apple.

Pictures look very nice. Indeed a Mac tablet PC, combining notebook and IPhone, multi-touch and other technologies. Too good to be truth.  But.. There are many rumors, that it will be released by the end of this year.

Russian newspaper Vedomosti investigated how much the new IPhone 3G costs in Russia, country where users cannot buy IPhone officially.  The results are impressive.

Several russian web sites offer IPhone 3G 8Gb for $1200. Rumors say that In Moscow it is possible to find one foe $775, but it is not easy. However $1200 is not the limit at all. In some big shopping center in Moscow one can buy IPhone 3G for $3449.

Some analysts report, that there are about 400,000 IPhones in Russia. Every month this number increases by approximately 33,000.

There were many discussions about unlocked IPhone 3G. The first step is to buy the device without AT&T (or some other operator) subscribtion. There are rumors that without a contract IPhone will cost $600-$800 in the US. George Hotz in his blog says that the best way is to buy contract and cancel it. It will cost $200+$35+175=$410. Which is not bad at all.

As for the unlock software, I believe it will be avaliable quite soon.

We are all waiting too see Java logo on our IPhones. I do too. But... there are obstacles and restrictions. The main point is that Sun really wants see Java on the IPhone. Community wants to see it. Large companies want to be able to create Java based applications. This is a huge market. However there will be probably no Java if Apple doesn't want it to be. That's what I've heard from a vice president of Sun Microsystems. The good news is that Sun wants to be ready with Java for the IPhone in case of everything will go well. So I assume there are investigations and probably some development going on already. And of ofcourse lawers are working hard too :-).

So what about Apple? Apple will be able to make money with Java. There is a huge market and big money. Enterprise solutions, regular applications and etc. Everybody will benefit from it. We'll see quite soon, what will happen.
