Microsoft Announces Its New Tablet Called Surface

Microsoft has unveiled its new tablet that will compete with iPad, Google’s Android and tablets from other manufacturers.

The Microsoft Surface is a 10.6-inch tablet running Windows 8 and will come in two models. One will be powered by OS Windows RT and ARM processor. It will ship in 64GB or 32GB versions.

The other model will include Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors, USB 3.0 support, and will be powered by the desktop version of Windows 8. This model will ship in 64GB or 128GB versions and will support digital ink through a pen which magnetizes to the tablet. Both models will also include a built-in kickstand and a vapor-deposited magnesium case.

In addition to the Surface itself, the company will offer two Smart Cover-like devices attaching magnetically to the tablet. Unlike Apple Smart Cover that serves only as a stand and screen protection, Microsoft’s Type Cover and Touch Cover can turn into a keyboard with a built-in trackpad. According to Microsoft, typing on the Touch Cover is twice as efficient as using a touchscreen.

Microsoft did not provide any details on availability or pricing, saying only that both models would be price competitive with other tablets.
