Broadcast video live from iPhone
Users running the 2.0 version of the software will need to wait for Qik to release a compatible version, which the company expects to do in the near future. Unfortunately, it’s likely that the application won’t be available through the official App Store, as Apple still hasn’t enabled video capture using the phone’s integrated camera.

Disable airplane mode before installing Prior to installing the iPhone OS 2.0.1 update, make sure that Airplane mode is not enabled on your iPhone. Having Airplane mode turned on can result in a non-functional phone when the update is applied. You may receive the error message:
“Information for activation cannot be obtained from the iPhone”
Fortunately, you can disable Airplane mode from the emergency screen if your iPhone is put into an inactivated state by a problematic update.
“iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone” Several users are receiving the error message “iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. An unknown error occurred (OxE80000001).”
If this error occurs, try clicking the “Restore” button in iTunes rather than “Update.”

New firmware 2.0.1
The main purpose is bug fixing. Many applications work faster. Here is the list of changes:
- Drag an app icon across multiple pages in one motion, rather than having to drag it, drop it, pick it up again and drag it over to next page, and repeat.
- Contacts are now more responsive.
- Backup is much faster.
- Apple may have changed the calibration of the iPhone's reception "bars" while connected to a 3G network to reflect a stronger signal than before.
- Keypad loads quicker.
- Screen rotation in Safari appears to be smoother.
- Some apps may ask to be updated after the firmware upgrade.
- SMS typing faster.
- Google Apps works faster.
- Netshare still works (for those who use it).
- Works with iPod.
- Multimedia content is kept after update.
- No Support from Pwnage and WinPwn. If you update you'll loose unlock and jailbreak.

New Cydia Installer
Today, Cydia got a nice face-lift and some nice new features. When you enter the “manage” page you will be given choices between mananging your packages and managing your sources. Manageing sources does not mean that you can add old installer sources. You still must have a valid apt source for Cydia.
It is now possible to edit which packages you do and do not want to see. Cydia comes up and asks you for your preferences at start to ask you which “role” you play:
- If you are a user and you do not want to see all the console applications, select “user”. “User” is similar to the level that most installer users are familiar with since installer did not contain a lot of development / hacking packages.
- Hacker displays the GUI apps as well as command line apps used in SSH or terminal.
- “Developer” will filter out nothing, showing you everything. Many “users” may find some of these packages annoying. This is why you now have a choice!
You can later change this selection by going into “manage” and clicking on “settings”.
In addition, you can filter on “sections” (these are Categories in Installer). You can just tap the “edit” button on top of the “sections” page. If you tap that you will see this screen that lets you enable / disable various sections. Very cool, indeed.

IPhone Backup Disabler v1.1
TwelvePin has released the Backup Disabler, a new iTunes utility for Mac OS X. Backup Disabler allows users to turn off iTunes 7.7’s backup feature for the iPhone and iPod touch. The application also allows this functionality to be restored, both with a single click.
The balance between backing up that your latest saved game or text messages and waiting an hour for your phone to sync is a delicate one. Now, you can easily sync without waiting for the backups, and just as easily re-enable them whenever you like. Backup Disabler works by setting a hidden iTunes preference to turn off syncing, as shown
NetShare - share iPhone's network connection
There was a method to use IPhone's internet connection on a desktop (
NetShare is one app we never thought would make it onto the official iPhone App Store. The $9.99 application promises to allow you to share your iPhone's network connection with your computer. All it does is set up a SOCKS5 proxy for you to get your laptop/computer online through use of the 3G/EDGE connection. Does it work? Yes. Yes it does, much to our surprise. EDGE works just fine, although Mahoney says it's slow as balls. 3G impressions in a sec. Be careful of how much bandwidth you're using, since your provider probably makes a frowny face at you using their network to power your laptop, however "unlimited" your plan may be. How this got passed Apple and AT&T who knows.
Link to AppStore:
Update 1: There are some bugs with iPhone 3G.
Update 2: The application is gone. Now we're getting the message that it's not available in the US store
Update 3: Just an official reply from Nullriver:
"We're not quite sure why Apple took down the application yet, we've received no communication from Apple thus far. NetShare did not violate any of the Developer or AppStore agreements. We're hoping we'll get some feedback from Apple tomorrow. Sorry to all the folks that couldn't get it in time. We'll do our best to try to get the application back onto the AppStore if at all possible. At the very least, I would hope Apple will allow it in countries where the provider does permit tethering."
Update 4: The application re-appeared in iTunes. It is avaliable through direct link:
Update 5: It's gone.. again.

Car Performance Meter for IPhone
This is one of the most interesting applications for IPhone.
Dynolicious is an all-purpose automotive performance meter, utilizing the built-in accelerometer in the iPhone and iPod touch to record your driving characteristics. BunsenTech, the makers of the software, claim that it can record 0-60 times within .08 of a second, accurately estimate your current speed and monitor and record any directional G force. The system seeks to perform nearly every function of (much) more expensive dedicated monitoring units, which seems like an awfully tall order for a $12.99 piece of cellphone software.
Specifically, the Dynolicious software gives you:
- 0-60 MPH
- Other Speed Tests (0-10 MPH through 0-100 MPH in 10MPH increments)
- Quarter Mile Elapsed Time
- Quarter Mile Trap Speed
- Elapsed Time and Trap Speed for standard intervals (60', 330', 1/8 Mi, 1000')
- Lateral G's (current and peak)
- Braking G's (current and peak)
- Wheel Horsepower
- Estimated Engine Horsepower
- Realtime Speedometer and Graphs
- Realtime graphical skidpad display
- View results for latest test run or any saved run
- View averages based on vehicle, date, or modification
- Compare results between vehicles, dates, or before-and-after modifications

The new version of the popular
As seen in the video, controlling Mario is fairly natural, though quick turns and exact jumps are difficult to execute (playing Mario with the stock controls is often worse, though). Bomberman sort of works, but in that case—and many others—the old touch control overlay is much easier. Obviously none of these games were designed with tilt control in mind, but a surprising number are at least playable.

MagixPad - notes app with copy/paste
This video walkthrough of MagicPad, a rich text editor app that is still pending acceptance into the App Store, is notable for showing the first working copy and paste framework on the iPhone (at the 1:00 mark). Of course, SDK limitations keep the functionality quarantined within MagicPad itself, but its developers, Proximi, hope to use it as a case study for pushing forward one of the iPhone software's most wanted features.
