New iPhone is widely expected to be announced at WWDC 2009. But what name will Apple give to this new device?

• iPhone 4G would assume 4G LTE wireless networks, which haven’t even begun to be rolled out yet, so last year’s scheme is out.
• iPhone 3.5/3.9G is likewise a non-starter. HSPA+ is not for Apple.
• iPhone 32GB is spoken all over internet. This name is more about memory, than a phone. It forces Apple to do actually 32GB models, etc. This too seems unlikely.
• iPhone Pro fits with Mac Pro and MacBook Pro (and even Final Cut Pro). This name is cool, but kind of already used and abused by Palm Treo Pro, HTC Touch Pro, and a variety of other stylus-wielding Windows Phones.
• iPhone, sans descriptor is always a possibility. After all, it’s not iMac X, Y, or Z, it’s just iMac. Whether internal documents say iPhone 2,1 or iPhone 3rd Generation, Apple could be ballsy enough at this point to just stick with the unadorned moniker.
• iPhone HD - high resolution screen, full HD support, 10Mp camera.. all this is just our dreams. Why not?

Apple has updated the official website dedicated to the WWDC, the event where Apple will present Firmware 3.0, the new iPhone and more. The news are great -  all available seats are gone.

The latest rumors say that the Keynote will not be presented by Steve Jobs.

Apple has announced the date for it’s 2009 World Wide Developer Conference: June 8-12.

Last year, Steve Jobs’ Keynote at WWDC gave us an update on iPhone 2.0, the introduction of MobileMe, and the unveiling of the iPhone 3G. What will they have for us this year? More iPhone 3.0 no doubt. iPhone gen 3? Snow Leopard? Mac Netbook?

As usual, WWDC will be held at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco, and will again consist of iPhone, Mac, and IT streams. Apple says:

Apple is already providing developers with a new iPhone firmware beta with enhanced location-finding that could lead to true navigation as well as the roots for background push services.

The one of new features is update to core Location - it can now recognize the cardinal direction of an iPhone with GPS as well as its velocity, both of which are ingredients necessary to providing turn-by-turn directions. The additions confirm statements recently by Apple's Greg Joswiak, who rejected earlier claims that iPhone 3G's GPS antenna wasn't powerful enough to handle navigation and in turn explained that "complicated issues" are holding the device back from serving as a true navigation unit.

Apple is also implementing a rough version of its background push notification service in the 2.1 firmware. Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference, the feature lets third-party native programs receive data such as alerts or new messages without actively running. The measure saves processing power without interrupting some apps that depend on constant access to the Internet.

The inclusion of this early version of the code alludes to the 2.1 update becoming public at the same time as the push notification service itself, which is tentatively due for September. In the meantime, Apple and its US partner AT&T are known to be testing iPhone 2.0.1, a maintenance release that likely fixes some of the outstanding bugs with the initial 2.0 release.

During WWDC 2008 keynote Steve Jobs compared EDGE and 3G by downloading the same site in Safari on both old and new IPhones. Guys from CNet performed similar testing:

The results are 31 seconds with IPhone 3G and 53 seconds with old IPhone (EDGE). Quite impressive.

PS: By the way. They said "I'm done" a bit slow. Progress bars were done in 29 and 49 seconds correspondingly.
