Xcode 4 Preview 4 released to developers
Apple has released their 4th preview of Xcode 4 to developers today. If you’re a developer
This is a pre-release version of Xcode 4, a major new release of Xcode for both Mac and iOS development. This release requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and includes the iOS SDK 4.1, to develop apps for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Please review the Release Notes and Readme before installing this software.
Apple released iOS 4.2 Beta 2 and iTunes 10.1 Beta 5
Apple today released the new beta of iOS 4.2 firmware (iOS 4.2 beta 2), the software development kit (SDK) and Xcode 3.2.5. This is available for developers only.
The update includes:
- iPad multitasking gets new animation
- New YouTube video uploading options
- New Game Center compatibility indicators on mobile iOS App Store
App Store will no longer support iOS 2.x apps
Apple announced yesterday that applications targeting to iOS 2.x will no longer be supported. This means that apps for iOS 2.x will be rejected during approval process. Developers are encouraged to re-build their apps in Xcode and set the target to iOS 3.x or later so they will not run into submission or app removal issues.
iPhone 3.1.3 SDK now available
Along with a new firmware for iPhone and iPod Touch Apple released a new version of SDK - 3.1.3. It's a required update, otherwise Xcode will not recognize or work with your 3.1.3 device. You can download it at
As usual the iPhone SDK includes Xcode, the iPhone simulator, and other tools for developing applications for iPhone and iPod Touch. If you want to develop for the iPad, you'll need the SDK version 3.2 instead.
Learning to develop for the iPhone
Couple days ago the developers of MitAPP held a lecture at the University of Bologna on programming for the iPhone and using the SDK. The entire mini-course consists of 3 classes. Here are the first slides about the development environment (XCode and Interface Builder):
iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 released: what's new?
Apple released new SDK and new firmware and 3.1 beta 2. Unless you have a developer account with Apple, don't plugging your iPhone into iTunes, you're not going to have access to it. However here is an unofficial changelist:
- Minor release focused more to fix the bugs.
- New APIs for video and images. It appears that there will be many applications in AppStore, suitable to apply effects on a video or create animated slideshow.
- Xcode bug-fixes.
- More items have been localized, such as "In Play", "Request access WiFi".
- Developers will be able to use WiFi for debuging, etc.
- Baseband is now version 05:10:01. This means that all those who use unlock - do not update yet.
- The iPhone is heated much less.
- Old method to turn tethering on does not work anymore.
