Apple Confirms the White iPhone 4 is Coming in Spring 2011

white iphone 4

Some new promo materials appeared in Apple Stores around the United State. They have an interesting signage which claims that the white iPhone 4 will be available Spring 2011. That confirms an earlier report.  Though, we may hear rumors about the fifth-generation iPhone handset, which also is expected to be released spring 2011. Steve Jobs will most likely announce the device at WWDC ’11. Many believe that Apple sooner will simply release a modified version of the iPhone 4 or a white version of its fifth-generation handset than the white iPhone 4.

Despite of all doubts the iPhone 4 is the most popular smartphones of the year in terms of sales and reviews.

WARNING: updating to iPad baseband for iPhone unlock may disable your GPS

baseband-update

The iPhone Dev-Team has issued a notice stating that updating your iPhone to the iPad baseband for unlock could result in the loss of GPS functionality.

Unlockers have been reporting mixed results about GPS functionality at 06.15.00. Until we can track down what differentiates those who retain GPS vs. those who lose it, be conservative and assume you’ll lose GPS at 06.15.00. As we work on finding the cause (and possibly a fix), please report your personal findings in our comments section. (Update: early indications are that while 06.15.00 is capable of GPS, it will require some further hacks. But please still be conservative and assume you will lose GPS at 06.15, in case the hacks don’t work).

Hackers are currently working to fix this.

As usual we remind all users - if you don't absolutely need to update your baseband, don't do it.

PingDom: Android is the leading OS only in South Korea

MobileOS.globe

As you may know, today's StatCounter published its fresh report based on web analytics about mobile users. Unfortunately, StatCounter can monitor only web traffic, but not the way the smartphones are being used. However, the results of such research can offer many different data that can be organized in different ways.

For example, a vendor of network server monitoring tools Pingdom also took the Statcounter's results but analyzed only mobile OS usage, including the stats for iPod touch (iPad wasn't included). It was found that though the sales of Android-based smartphones have overtaken the sales of the iPhone in the US, such a statement does not take into account the fact that iPod touch is the most popular portable media player, and it is also based on iOS, which makes the latter the most popular mobile OS in the country.

Real White iPhone 4 Handsets Appear On Chinese Market?

white-iphone-4s

GizChina reports that the genuine white iPhone 4s are being sold by unofficial resells, that means it is being sold on the Chinese gray market. As you can see from the above image, the handsets appear to be real, though it hasn’t yet been confirmed. The boxes, in which the device comes in, are marked with a label warning the phone should be used for internal company use only and not for sale. Currently, the handsets are selling for around $899. This price, obviously, is well above the official retail price of the regular black iPhone 4 in China.

European carriers threaten Apple over embedded SIM option

SIM free iphone

As reported, Apple is developing a built-in SIM card for the Phone. Such embedded SIM card allows users to activate their devices with a broad array of carriers. Moreover, with such card, customers could insist on shorter-term contracts, using the ability to easily switch between carriers as leverage. So, some European carriers (Vodafone in the UK, France Telecom and Telefónica in Spain) are threatening Apple to withhold their iPhone subsidies if the company deploys the technology on the iPhone. Apple was accused in gain control of carriers’ relationship with their mobile customers. This technology allows customers to sign up for mobile service directly on Apple's website. It could allow customers to switch more easily from one to another and even lead to a "war" between operators and Apple. As estimated, Apple’s global iPhone sales could take a 12 percent hit if European carriers carried out their threats.

Apple kills AirPlay on iPhone 3G [Video]

doesnt-airplay1

Multiple developers and users testing out the iOS 4.2 betas claim that the AirPlay functionality was definitely removed from Apple’s iPhone 3G. AirPlay is gone from the golden master version of iOS 4.2. In fact, the AirPlay did work on the iPhone 3G at the previous betas. There are no any reasonable causes why the AirPlay was cut from the GM version.  Perhaps, Apple is trying to get users to upgrade to their latest iPhone model or, on the other hand, it is just an issue in the GM seed. May be the AirPlay functionality will return in iOS 4.2 public release. Anyway, there will undoubtedly be a jailbreak that can re-enable it.
