According to data from market research firm NPD (via BusinessInsider), Apple’s Mac sales in U.S. are up 22% year-on-year for two month of the third quarter of this year, leading the company to a new record for quarterly sales of Macs. Gene Munster, analyst from research firm Piper Jaffray, attributed so high sales to launch of new Mac mini and MacBook Air line in July, which is expected to account for 10 to 20 percent of total sales of Macs over the third quarter.

According to Gene Munster’s forecasts, Apple could sell over 4.6 million Mac in the third quarter, beating the record of 4.1 million Macs over the Q4 of 2010.

NPD also predicted that iPod sales are down 16% year-on-year for two months of the third quarter, which is actually better than analysts had predicted. Although iPod touch sales continue to be high, they have been declining for past two years because customers have increasingly opted for smartphones representing a single-device option for their music, phone and other needs.
