Apple's North Carolina data center to open "any day now" and be doubled to 1M sq.m.
Citing anonymous sources at Apple, some experts claim that Apple’s new data center in North Carolina may begin operations "any day now". Although the aerial footage of the site shows continued construction. The sources also noted that Apple is going to build the second facility on the site. It means that the size of the 500,000 square-foot data center may be doubled to 1M sq.m. This $1 billion data center is already five times larger than the company's current one in Newark, California.
The exact purpose of the massive server farm remains unknown, but analysts predict that it will play a key role in Apple's cloud computing and streaming media service. It is evidenced by the release of the new MacBook Airs with just 64GB of internal flash memory.
