iPhone And Android Own Over 90% Of U.S. Smartphone Market

According to the latest data from research company Nielsen, Apple’s iOS and Android have both accounted for over 90 percent of U.S. smartphone purchases in last three months. During the same period the closest competitor RIM’s Blackberry was bought only by 5 percent of respondents. Other operating systems such as WebOS, Symbian, Windows Phone get only 4 percent share combined.

The research showed that Android continues to be the most popular OS in the U.S. smartphone market with 48 percent of smartphone owners claiming they owned an Android device.

“Nearly a third (32.1%) of smartphone users have an Apple iPhone, and Blackberry owners represented another 11.6 percent of the smartphone market. Among recent acquirers who got their smartphone within the last three months, 48 percent of those surveyed in February said they chose an Android and 43 percent bought an iPhone”.

Android OS has showed pretty constant performance with 48 percent of existing smartphone owners and 48 percent recent purchasers preferring Android devices.

Since the release of iPhone 4S, Apple's smartphones have gained more popularity. iPhone is the smartphone of choice for 32 percent of existing smartphone owners and 43 percent of recent buyers have chosen iPhones at the expense of small-share operating systems.
