3 000 000 iPhone 3G's sold in a month

According to Fortune and analyst Michael Cote of the Cote Collaborative, Apple has already hit the three million mark, with many investors expecting only three to four million handsets sold by the end of the quarter.

It took over 10 weeks for the original iPhone to sell just one million handsets. The iPhone 3G accounts for almost a third of all iPhones sold, ever.

Cote says that meeting demand will be Apple's challenge going forward, as it enters 20 new countries on August 22 -- almost doubling its market presence worldwide.

WinPwn 2.0.0.4 with support of 2.0.1 firmware

PwnageTool 2.0.2 released just a day ago. And now WinPwn - iPhone jailbreaker and unlocker for windows is avaliable. The main new feature - it supports firmware 2.0.1.

Download 2.0.0.4: [Rapidshare.com] [Rapidshare.de]

Download firmwares: iPhone 1.1.4, 2.0, 2.0.1, iPhone 3G 2.0, 2.0.1

2.0.0.4 features:

  • Support for both 1.1.4, 2.0, 2.0.1
  • Root partition resize support
  • Installer support
  • Support for WinXP and Vista 32/64bit.

Notes are as usual:

  • You MUST do a full uninstall of winpwn before installing the new version
  • Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (from 7.7)
  • WinPwn uses 300MB of ram at peak due to the ipsw being extracted in memory
  • You must first click browse and load an IPSW to use WinPwn (i thought this was clear)
  • For 2.0 only the *5A347_Restore.ipsw files are valid. The 345 image will not work
  • If you see Failed to load image catalog/payload catalog, this is fine and won’t cause problems
  • If you already have service with AT&T do not activate or install Youtube Fix
  • As usual jailbreak for iPhone and iPhone 3G, unlock only for iPhone.
  • It is recommended to use at least 550mb partition size to accommodate a space issue that causes some folks errors such as “the ipsw failed to create”.

PwnageTool 2.0.2 is avaliable

PwnageTool 2.0.2 is out. It will support new firmware 2.0.1. It will jailbreak and unlock the old iPhone and jailbreak new iPhone 3G. Here are the download links:

Installer 4 Beta is included, it is added in any mode by default.  The main installer package management interface within PwnageTool isn’t enabled yet, and will report that installer.app isn’t available, but the actual Installer.app package is added as a default option in both modes.

The latest Cydia is also enabled by default. We recommend to use Cydia, not Installer.

Negative feedback on 2.0.1. Update bricking some iPhones.

Here is some negative feedback on 2.0.1.

  • A small number of blog readers and Apple-support forum participants have reported the update bricked their handsets or killed Wi-Fi functionality. Didn't show up during testing by many labs.
  • There are several reports that updating to 2.0.1 on an iPhone in Airplane mode may result in bricked phones.
  • Users who paid Vodaphone to unlock their phones for international roaming have reported the update breaks connections with their carriers.
  • A few users report occasional lag in the Contacts, SMS and e-mail apps. From our testing, typing in the Contacts app is still laggy, but SMS and e-mail is faster.
  • No surprise whatsoever: Updating results in losing access to your jailbroken (i.e. hacked) apps. 2.0.1 updates iPhone 3G's baseband, you may never be able to unlock the handset again if you run this update.
  • Many users are reporting 2.0.1 is slow with backup. This more likely has to do with the version of iTunes they're running; many have said iTunes 7.7.1 sped up backup and syncing.

Solar powered charging case for the iPhone 3G

There are many solutions like battery packs and rechargeable hip holsters for iPhone and iPhone 3G. However, the new case from Mobile Fun has one advantage over all of these other devices—it can be charged by the sun.

The case itself features a sizable 1500mAh battery pack that they claim can be charged by the sun in as little as three hours. It also has a mini USB to USB cable that allows you to charge from your PC or hook up other gadgets for a quick shot of sweet solar juice. The case is slated for release in August in both black and white versions for around $54.

Another hardware unlock for iPhone 3G

It is similar to the previous one. Same idea. The slim chip-and-circuit gizmo hugs the rear of your SIM and messes with the signals that go between it and the iPhone (or, indeed, a large number of other GSM and 3G phones) in a way that unlocks the device. Brando's product still requires you to cut your SIM to make room for the chip aboard it, but it looks a fairly simple operation. Costs just $21.

40 миллионов iPhone в год

Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant that produces the iPhone 3G for Apple, has ramped up production to 800,000 units per week, says a source close to Apple with direct knowledge of the numbers.

Apple sold just 6 million of its first generation iPhones. Foxconn factories will be able to ramp production up significantly over time, says our source. But at current sell rates, the company is producing iPhones at a run rate of over 40 million units per year, well beyond early estimates of demand for the product of 25 million over the 3G product lifecycle.

NetShare - share iPhone's network connection

There was a method to use IPhone's internet connection on a desktop (Get internet on a desktop or notebook through IPhone 3G), now there is an officail one:

NetShare is one app we never thought would make it onto the official iPhone App Store. The $9.99 application promises to allow you to share your iPhone's network connection with your computer. All it does is set up a SOCKS5 proxy for you to get your laptop/computer online through use of the 3G/EDGE connection. Does it work? Yes. Yes it does, much to our surprise. EDGE works just fine, although Mahoney says it's slow as balls. 3G impressions in a sec. Be careful of how much bandwidth you're using, since your provider probably makes a frowny face at you using their network to power your laptop, however "unlimited" your plan may be. How this got passed Apple and AT&T who knows.

Link to AppStore: NetShare. Tutorial is here: NetShare HOW TO.

Update 1: There are some bugs with iPhone 3G.

Update 2: The application is gone. Now we're getting the message that it's not available in the US store

Update 3: Just an official reply from Nullriver:

"We're not quite sure why Apple took down the application yet, we've received no communication from Apple thus far. NetShare did not violate any of the Developer or AppStore agreements. We're hoping we'll get some feedback from Apple tomorrow. Sorry to all the folks that couldn't get it in time. We'll do our best to try to get the application back onto the AppStore if at all possible. At the very least, I would hope Apple will allow it in countries where the provider does permit tethering."

Update 4: The application re-appeared in iTunes. It is avaliable through direct link: NetShare.

Update 5: It's gone.. again.

Cracks in plastic. Are white IPhones 3G's bad?

A number of iPhone 3G owners are reporting the appearance of hairline cracks in the plastic finish of the phone. According to threads on Mac Rumors forums and Apple’s Discussion Boards, the cracks appear to be manifesting mostly in the white 16GB version of the phone; however, Engadget notes this may be due to the fact that the cracks are easier to see in the white model than the black (see photo below). Importantly, iPhone owners experiencing the issue report that the cracks appear without the device being dropped, sat on, or misused in any way. It is unclear what might be causing the problem, or how widespread the issue is.

Top 10 sellers in AppStore

The big winners in Apple's new online App Store are gamemakers, who dominated sales in the week since the new iPhone 3G hit stores.

Seven of the top 10 paid applications, including the top five, were video games, led by Sega's Super Monkey Ball, a rolling racing game. Even among the free iPhone and iPod Touch applications, which include popular social networking sites like Facebook and the Internet radio service Pandora, the top title is Tap Tap Revenge, a rhythm game similar to Guitar Hero.

These 10 titles sold the best in the iTunes App Store:

  1. Super Monkey Ball (Sega) games

  2. Texas Hold 'Em (Apple) games

  3. Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3-D (Vivendi) games

  4. Enigmo (Pangea Studios) games
  5. Tetris (EA) games

  6. iBeer (Hotrix) entertainment

  7. Recorder (Retronyms) utilities

  8. Solitaire (MobilityWare) games

  9. Units (Crossword Solutions) utilities

  10. Scrabble (EA) games

Unlock for IPhone 3G - almost there

DevTeam posted a new interesting screenshot. They successfully downgraded modem firmware. This is not an unlock (yet), but it is a good illustration of the first progress made with regard to hacking the 3G baseband. They accomplished this by being able to execute their own code on the baseband that allows to circumvent security checks and flash the baseband with older, disallowed firmware. Please note this has been accomplished using software only, the iPhone 3G has not been disassembled or hardware modified in any way.
