Spotify streaming music service may appear on iPhone and iPad

According to the information provided by The Verge, the music streaming service Spotify has been talking about creating a section of free subscription for smartphones and tablets.

"Spotify, the popular music subscription service, is due to meet in the coming weeks with its major counterparts in the record industry to renew their licensing agreements. The Verge has learned that managers at Spotify are expected to ask for substantial price breaks from the music labels as well as the rights to extend its free pricing tier to mobile devices."

Currently, Spotify Free is available only on computers. To access the service via the iPhone or the iPad it requires a premium subscription, priced at 9.99 dollars. Spotify, probably, needs such agreement to achieve profitability. Despite 5 million paying subscribers and another 15 million users gaining free access to the service, Spotify works on cost recovery.

Music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora have had not easy relationship with music labels and artists, in view of the extremely low level of payment for the right to use streaming music. Several popular artists, including Coldplay and Adele, do not allow Spotify to use their music for streaming for this reason.

There were rumors that Apple plans to launch its own music streaming service in addition to the iTunes, but industry sources said that the company had achieved minor results.
