Couple weeks ago I bought a brand new metronome for $30. I wish I knew about this application for my iPhone:

Fully functional metronome. Include tap tempo feature, ranges from 30 to 250 BPM, 0 to 19 beats per bar, and has 9 selectable rhythms.

AppBackup is a program for the iPhone/iPod touch that lets you back up and restore the saved data and settings for your App Store apps.

To back up one app, open AppBackup, select the app, and then select Backup. To restore an app, select it and then select Restore. (If there is no restore option, then it hasn't been backed up yet.) To back up all apps at once, tap All at the top-left of the screen, and select Backup. To restore all apps that have been backed up at once, tap All and select Restore. (You must have at least one app backed up in order to see this option).

A jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running iPhoneOS 2.0 or later, with Cydia and at least one App Store app.

With Simplify Media installed on your computer you can stream your home iTunes library to your mobile device wherever you may be. It will supposedly work over EDGE, 3G, or WiFi

Simplify Media for Mac/PC is a free download. Only the first 100,000 copies of the iPhone version are free to download, after that it will be $3.99.

In the month since Apple opened an online software clearinghouse called the App Store, users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in an interview at Apple's headquarters.

While many of the applications were free, Apple sold an average of $1 million a day in applications for a total of about $30 million in sales over the month, Mr. Jobs said.

If sales stay at the current pace, Apple stands to reap at least $360 million a year in new revenue from the App Store, Mr. Jobs said. "This thing's going to crest a half a billion, soon," he added. "Who knows, maybe it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time."

Apple is keeping only 30% of the proceeds from application sales -- about enough to cover expenses from credit-card transactions and other costs of running the online store -- while the programs' creators keep 70%.

Apple calls it iTunes U, an unsung but popular feature of iTunes. Audio and video downloads of classroom lectures are available to anyone who wants to listen to them through a computer or an iPod. Though the program has existed on a smaller scale for a few years, it now offers more than 50,000 audio and video tracks - course lectures, language lessons, speeches - from scores of universities and colleges. Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Yale are there. Beginning in the fall, both UC-Berkeley and Stanford are planning expansions to their respective digital lecture programs.

The big winners in Apple's new online App Store are gamemakers, who dominated sales in the week since the new iPhone 3G hit stores.

Seven of the top 10 paid applications, including the top five, were video games, led by Sega's Super Monkey Ball, a rolling racing game. Even among the free iPhone and iPod Touch applications, which include popular social networking sites like Facebook and the Internet radio service Pandora, the top title is Tap Tap Revenge, a rhythm game similar to Guitar Hero.

Thanks to Dev Team and the porting work of Jay Freeman as well as the authors of 3Proxy, it is now possible to "tether" your iPhone 3G and use its Internet connection on your laptop.

Warning - Tethering your iPhone is against the iPhone data plan terms. AT&T could slap you with huge fees if you overuse this. I recommend only using it during emergencies.

Here is a basic plan (by the way, this should work for old IPhone also):

• Jailbreak your iPhone 3G
• Install 3Proxy and Terminal
• Create an ad-hoc Wi-fi network using your laptop
• Join the network with your iPhone
• Find the iPhone's IP address
• Open Terminal and run the proxy program
• Open Safari on your iPhone and open a web page
• Configure your browser to use the proxy

AT&T provides an online tool to find a Wi-Fi spot near you.

This is about Wi-Fi spots in the US. AT&T has access (company-owned, branded and roaming) to over 70,000 Wi-Fi hotsport in 89 countries and 389 airports.

Update:

Unfortunately, everyone got too excited over nothing - the Wi-Fi is still not available, and the “document” was a mistake. Here is an email from one of their spokespeople:

• We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone. The webpage was posted in error and is being removed. Wi-Fi is a real differentiator for AT&T and it is our intention to make it available to as many customers as possible, but we have no announcement at this time.

Our comments:

5. No voice dialing

There is do such feature. But.. There is an application called VoiceDial. For old jailbreaked IPhones it is possible to install via Installer. For the new IPhone 3G VoiceDial is avaliable through AppStore. By the way it is not free, cost is about $30.

4. No cut and paste

Indeed, not in IPhone or IPhone 3G for now. But, read this.

3. Can't use as a modem

That is a problem. No such feature. And there will be no such feature in the future.

UODATE: Get internet on a desktop or notebook through IPhone 3G

2. No multimedia messaging

There is an application called SwirlyMMS - works well. Costs $8, works well on old IPhones.

1. Locked up

Not only this. It is not possible to buy IPhone 3G without a contract. We'll wait for an unlock and sells without a contract.

Pinchmedia provided new report of prices for IPhone application in AppStore. The percentage of applications that are free is falling. However competition among paid applications is leading to price cuts - the most common price is $0.99. Almost 69% of paid applications are now $4.99 or less. $9.99 remains the second-most popular price. As of this morning, Pinch Media tracked 798 applications in the AppStore - 161 (20.2%) free, 637 (79.8%) paid.
