Being a suite of command-line utilities, this release is meant primarily for developers. While you can certainly jailbreak (both 3G and first-gen) and unlock (first-gen) with it, it's not really something you want to try without reading the lengthy, detailed README. If you don't have the patience to do that, this release is not for you.
For users this news mean that quite soon there will be a new version of winpwn, supporting 2.0.
Safari benchmark - 2.0 is faster than 1.1.4
There is not much defference between Safari 1.1.4 and 2.0. But Under the hood, MobileSafari 2.0's performance is hugely improved over 1.1.4. Everything related to web surfing feels faster, web pages consistently load faster on 2.0, both via Wi-Fi and EDGE. This has nothing to do with the new iPhone 3G hardware — this is about dramatic performance improvements on original iPhones upgraded to the 2.0 OS.
Using MobileSafari simply feels faster, especially with web applications. Feel is by nature subjective, but JavaScript benchmarks back this up.
In August last year,
Test | 1.0.1 | 1.1.4 | 2.0 | Vs. 1.0.1 / 1.1.4 |
---|---|---|---|---|
100,000 iterations | 3.209 | 1.096 | 0.145 | 22× / 8× |
10,000 divisions | 0.413 | 0.181 | 0.029 | 14× / 6× |
10,000 sin(x) calls | 0.709 | 0.373 | 0.140 | 5× / 3× |
10,000 string allocations | 0.777 | 0.434 | 0.133 | 6× / 3× |
10,000 function calls | 0.904 | 0.595 | 0.115 | 8× / 5× |
The last column shows how many times faster the 2.0 version of MobileSafari was versus 1.0.1 and 1.1.4. The same results, charted (smaller bars are faster) can be viewed above.
The results are obvious. WebKit JavaScript performance has improved steadily and significantly in just one year, with a huge jump between 1.1.4 and the new 2.0.0. In side-by-side page loading tests between two original iPhones running 1.1.4 and 2.0.0, the new version consistently finished at least a few seconds faster.
For all the hubbub regarding the new App Store, most “iPhone software” runs in the web browser. But improvements in WebKit performance often help native iPhone app performance, too — a slew of my favorite native iPhone apps have built-in WebKit browsers (e.g., NetNewsWire, Twitterrific, Instapaper, and Cocktails). When WebKit performance improves, any app that uses WebKit improves, and WebKit improved a lot between iPhone 1.1.4 and 2.0.0.

PwnageTool 2.0.1 released
Yesterday there was a
Here is the list of bugfixes:
- It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if they’re on your computer
- It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
- Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
- The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.
Because of the AppCast URL fix, we recommend that everyone who downloaded PwnageTool 2.0 get this version, if they want to stay up to date automatically.
If PwnageTool 2.0 pwned your phone correctly the first time, you do not need to pwn again with 2.0.1.

News about PwnageTool 2.0
DevTeam is working hard to release their PwnageTool 2.0. Today it became clear what it will be able to do:
- iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
- iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
- iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).
So no unlock for IPhone 3G. But, they promise to create the next version with support of unlock, bootneuter and etc for IPhone 3G. It just will take some time.
Copy/paste on IPhone
During an interview to AppScout Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president, described that there is a priority list for IPhone's functionality. And the copy/paste is there. It will be developed, it's just a matter of time.
Some news about GPS. For now there is no such functionality to receive instructions where to go in real time. David Poga from New York Times thinks this is because of a small GPS receiver antenna inside IPhone. Joswiak doesn't agree with that. He assumes that GPS module is quite competitive and is just like GPS modules in many other phones. This technical problem will be fixed quite soon, probably by some software from other company.
Firmware 2.0 is just released and we are all waiting for 2.1

PwnageTool 2.0 preview video
DevTeam recently published a video of working PwnageTool 2.0 - for unlocking, activating and jailbreaking IPhne fimware, that will work with the new firmware 2.0.
"Many many hours have gone into this and now it should be as easy enough for your grandmother to use. We’ve added lots of new features, including 2.0 support, spotlight file indexing of .ipsws, canned websearches, installer custom configuration, custom root partitions and various other things that you’ll see on the release. Release date is soon although not this weekend. So check out the video, hopefully it will hold you off until we release."
PwnageTool works with 2.0 upgraded 1st gen (!) iPhones if they are activated or not.

Cannot create? Convert!
There are two ways to enable Java applications run on the IPhone. The first one is to port Java to IPhone, and this is preferrable The second way is to create automatic Java to IPhone porting solution for individual applications.
A company called
alcheMo technology is basically J2ME to C++ translator and the run-time library. It converts Java application to C++ application, which can be compiled, run and debugged. Using native run-time libraries the native executable is created. The alcheMo run-time library provides equivalent functionality to those associated with J2ME, including support for automatic garbage collection, multi-threading and extensive subsets of CLDC 1.1 and MIDP 2.0, and extension JSRs.
There are several examples of porting games to BREW platform. Hopefully there will be some for the IPhone in the near future. For now alcheMo is in beta state, potential developers are invited to join.
By the way, alcheMo for iPhone supports the accelerometer, the touch screen and other unique iPhone features, through standard MIDP 2.0 API, JSR-256, and, where necessary, extension APIs. If J2ME application uses such APIs, it will automatically and immediately be accelerometer or touch screen capable on iPhone.
