Original Skype for iPhone

skype_logo

GigaOM reports that an iPhone version of Skype may be released as soon as next week, possibly at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas.

A few months ago, I asked Skype CEO Josh Silverman when was he going to launch the iPhone version of the P2P voice and IM service that has now been downloaded more than 405 million times. He smiled and said, "Stay tuned." And so we did.

A tipster, a very reliable one, tells me that Skype is almost ready to launch that iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week. CTIA Wireless, a large mobile industry trade event, kicks off in Las Vegas next Wednesday, so perhaps the announcement will be made there. I am working on getting more details, as well as screenshots of the service.

For now we can use Fring, which is free and works just fine.

Wolfenstein [Games, Cydia]

The original Wolfenstein is now available for free for the iPhone. You need to jailbreak your phone to get in on the fun. The game is truly a classic. This is a first-person shooter in which we should govern our character among many doors and endless mazes. The controls are "fairly" good, based solely on the touch screen.

Wolf3D avaliable from Cydia, repository ZodTTD.

External IR Keyboard for iPhone Without Jailbreaking

keyboard

Perceptive Development developed a hardware and software solution that allows infrared keyboards to be used for typing on the iPhone, using less than $20 of electronics. They have managed to get an external keyboard working via a custom connection built for the headphone jack. Headphone jack in/out hardware is one of the few interfaces that's open in the official SDK.

They have built a microcontroller that converts input from an external Targus IR keyboard into a format the iPhone's headphone jack can understand, which is then fed to a terminal app that doesn't require jailbreak. Nice!

New rumors about future iPhone

att-logo

Here are some new rumors about future iPhone from AT&T staff:

  • New iPhone announcement around mid-June
  • New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
  • U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
  • AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
  • Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
  • They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
  • Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
  • The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

Two thirds iPhones have latest 2.2.1 firmware

iphone-firmware-1

The data, covering one week and provided by Headlight Software, showed no one on 1.x, less than 2% total on 2.0.x, less than 7% on 2.1.x, 26.61% on 2.2, and a whopping 65.49% on the current firmware, 2.2.1 released January 27.

So two-thirds on the latest/greatest firmware, just over a quarter on the previous release. This meants iPhone users try to keep their firmware up to date.

Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone in use

You probably remember a video that we showed you a while ago: communication of the iPhone and the Apple Wireless keyboard via Bluetooth. That video was described by all as a fake. So the author created another video.

Both the keys and the display are in camera focus at the same time, iPhone is in Airplane Mode (so WLAN is intentionally off here) and it uses a simplified mechanism for key event injection (so there is no “VNC running on localhost” icon any longer).

I believe this video is not a fake, but where is bluetooth icon ...?

Categories updated to v2.23 [Cydia]

categoriesicon

Categories allows you to create folders on your desktop. It is a nice application from Cydia, recently updated to version 2.23.

Here is a change list:

  • Fixed issue where users behind a proxy had the app close and safari open in some cases.
  • Worked on memory usage. Fixed a large memory leak. (There is still a memory leak in the configuration part of the app, but it’s not as big. I hope I get time to fix it in the near future).
  • The iPhone 2.1 and newer froze up when trying to respring with less than 7MB RAM. When memory got low, springboard would kill the app causing it to respring and freeze up. The respring flag should now be cleared in most cases when memory gets this low.
  • The app will now detect if it gets closed due to low memory and allow you to continue your editing where you left off.
  • Memory free and respring state are now in the status bar while the app is running

AT&T and iPhone in Q4

AT&T today reported financial results from the fourth quarter of 2008 and announced that they had activated 1.9 million new iPhones during the quarter. Here are some numbers from Fortune:

  1. AT&T has activated 4.3 million iPhone 3Gs since its launch, 1.9 million in Q4 alone — more than double its iPhone activations one year earlier.
  2. The average revenue from Phone users is 60% higher than the typical AT&T customer — thanks to that $30 per month data fee. Their heavy use of Web services helped drive AT&T wireless data use up 51.2% year to year, which as reader Jon in Brentwood, Calif., points out is not necessarily a good thing.
  3. About 40% of the iPhone activations this quarter were new AT&T customers, either buying their first cellphone or switching from another carrier.
  4. The churn rate — the percentage of customers who drop AT&T’s service — among iPhone owners is significantly lower than the rest of the network, sharply reducing marketing costs.

The iPhone is still an expensive proposition for AT&T. The payback to Apple is between $288 and $432 per phone over the life of a 2-year contract. The company spent $450 million last quarter on network upgrades to provide high-speed 3G coverage.

On the other hand, Q4 revenues were up 2.4% (to $31.1 billion) in a tough economic climate thanks to results in the wireless division that CEO Randall Stephenson attributed largely to the iPhone.

New firmware 2.2.1

Apple has just pushed out Firmware 2.2.1 for iPhone and iPhone 3G, iPod touch, iPod touch 2G. You can download them here. Firmware 2.2.1 cannot be jailbroken at this time, so unofficial application users should wait for new version of QuickPwn from DevTeam. Unlock (yellowsn0w) also doesn't work for 2.2.1.

This update contains bug fixes and improvements:

  • Version 2.2.1 (Build 5H11)
  • Modem Firmware 02.30.03
  • Improved general stability of Safari
  • Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll
  • Fixed issue that caused some Apple Lossless (ALAC) to skip during playback
  • Unofficially Apple fixed SMS bug: users suddenly experience inability to send SMS text messages on the iPhone 3G, receiving the message "error sending" upon attempting to send.
