GT Advanced Orders Equipment and Materials for Production of iPhone 6's Sapphire Displays

According to the recent rumors, Apple’s supplier GT Advanced has ordered equipment and materials required for production of 100-200 million 5-inch sapphire displays for the would-be iPhone 6.

9to5Mac (via iClarified) notes that GT Advanced has reportedly purchased machinery to check “that its displays meet Apple's quality standards”. These tools are designed to inspect not the small pieces of sapphire material like those used for Touch ID, but large display-grade components.

In addition to the testing tools, GT Advanced has ordered numerous furnaces and chambers.

[...]

Both work together to transform sapphire crystal material into large hockey puck looking "boules". The "boules" are then re-processed, polished, and sliced into the shapes of displays.

The leaked documents indicate that GT Advanced has already received 518 of the above mentioned machines and is still waiting for 420 more. The first 518 units are capable of building about 103-116 million 5-inch sapphire displays per year and the additional 420 can cope with 84-94 million.

So, keeping these facts in mind, I’m almost sure that the iPhone 6 will get a brand new display. Apple is expected to release its next-generation handset this fall - probably in October.
