iPhone 4 - Not as Indestructible as Thought Before

dash2101002-1277317385

One of iPhone 4’s main design features is its front and black made entirely of glass which, according to Apple, is more resistant to scratches than ever. The company is so sure of the durability and strength of the new device’s glass that the only protection feature they are offering is bumpers for the edges, while the front and black are fully exposed.

According to some reviews from the iPhone 4’s new owners, the glass seems to be holding up quite well, and no effects were observed even after dropping the device. However, there are some new photos which prove that the situation is not as sunny as it is claimed to be.

White iPhones Won't Be Available Until Mid July

500x_screen_shot_2010-06-23_at_2.10.47_pm

According to Apple’s official statement, you won’t get any white iPhones until the second half of July as they have proven more difficult to make than it was expected. The availability of the black models, which are found to be more popular, will not be affected.

Strange as it might seem, producing white equipment is indeed more challenging than the black one. The reason for it is the fact that making the black back of the glass requires an electroplating process, which creates a smooth look. Consequently, to make the back of the glass white you have to paint the case, which makes it quite challenging to create a smooth opaque surface. If the paint goes on too thick, it could be rather difficult to glue the glass on, as the glue might stick to the paint and it’s possible that in the course of time the paint will peel off the glass.

81% of All Application Downloads Are Free

500x_appgraph

According to a recent Piper Jaffray's  research, out of 4 billion applications downloaded onto iPads, iPods and iPhones, 81% are free and the cost of the other 19% is averagely $1.49.

These numbers mean that Apple’s profit from apps since the opening of the App Store is $428 million, about 29 cents per application, while the company spent approximately $81 million to distribute the apps themselves.

It sounds like a huge sum of money at first, until you understand that it makes up just 1% of Apple’s total gross profit of $33.7 billion over the same period.

No More iPhone 4s at AT&T Till June 29

500x_iphone-preorder-disaster

If your iPhone 4 is pre-ordered – congratulations to you! You will be probably getting it very very soon. However, if you didn’t preorder, you’ll have to wait 6 more days, till June 29, to buy your iPhone at AT&T.

It’s no wonder that the date has been delayed, what with the mess the pre-ordering system was in and the fact that all the devices were sold out in less than one day. The pre-order sales of the iPhone 4 began on June 15 and they were 10 times as high as those for the iPhone 3GS last year on its first day. The company reports that they are happy to see the excitement around the new device and they are trying to help as many buyers as quickly as possible. As it was announced last week, the priority is to fulfill the pre-orders first.

AT&T is now in the middle of delivering iPhone 4 to those who preordered it on June 15. Here are some guidelines for the buyers getting iPhone 4 from AT&T:

Here is an interesting video, that compares two iPhone 3G firmwares - 4.0 and 3.1.3. The recently announced iOS 4 seems to be much slower.

Right: iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.1.3 (7E18)

However many users report that they have the speed of 3.1.3 on iOS 4.0.
