OpenClip - Copy/Paste for iPhone

One of the common complaints about Apple’s iPhone–and one that did not get solved with the launch of the iPhone 3G–is the lack of a copy-paste function. An independent developer Zac White has taken matters in his own hands and founded a non-profit, open source, community project called OpenClip which is offering iPhone developers a free Copy and Paste framework that will add this functionality to their applications.

Network problems - just 2%, but it's 60 000 users

A MacForums reader claims to have received a one-sentence e-mail from Steve Jobs regarding iPhone 3G connectivity issues.

According to MacForums, the e-mail says the following:

We are working on some bugs which affect around 2% of the iPhones shipped, and hope to have a software update soon.

Steve

If we're to trust Cote Collaborative analyst Michael Cote's estimate of 3 million iPhone 3Gs sold since July, 2 percent translates to about 60,000 users having problems with the 3G network. The reported issues have ranged from difficulty staying on the 3G network to slow overall performance.

iPhone 2.1 beta 4 - no push notification feature

Apple has just seeded iPhone 2.1 beta 4 to developers—uninteresting, really, except for the fact that the push notification service has been pulled from the release "for further development."

Targeted to hit your iPhone in September, the push service allows apps to receive notifications (internet data) in the background while they're not running, a godsend for AIM and other messaging apps. Hopefully this doesn't mean it'll be delayed.

Lotus notes for iPhone

IBM has unveiled a sneak peek of its new Lotus iNotes, a web app client for its Lotus Domino messaging server to bring email, calendar, and contacts to iPhone. The move fulfills rumors of customized iPhone support for Lotus Notes and demonstrates IBM's evolving interest in Apple within the enterprise.

Planned for delivery later this year, Lotus iNotes is built upon IBM's existing Lotus Domino Web Access infrastructure. The company's web site invites users to "bring the enterprise to your Apple iPhone" and says the software will deliver a "rich Apple iPhone user experience."

IBM published a series of screenshots of the tentative iNotes user interface, with the disclaimer that details are subject to change without notice.

Negative feedback on 2.0.1. Update bricking some iPhones.

Here is some negative feedback on 2.0.1.

  • A small number of blog readers and Apple-support forum participants have reported the update bricked their handsets or killed Wi-Fi functionality. Didn't show up during testing by many labs.
  • There are several reports that updating to 2.0.1 on an iPhone in Airplane mode may result in bricked phones.
  • Users who paid Vodaphone to unlock their phones for international roaming have reported the update breaks connections with their carriers.
  • A few users report occasional lag in the Contacts, SMS and e-mail apps. From our testing, typing in the Contacts app is still laggy, but SMS and e-mail is faster.
  • No surprise whatsoever: Updating results in losing access to your jailbroken (i.e. hacked) apps. 2.0.1 updates iPhone 3G's baseband, you may never be able to unlock the handset again if you run this update.
  • Many users are reporting 2.0.1 is slow with backup. This more likely has to do with the version of iTunes they're running; many have said iTunes 7.7.1 sped up backup and syncing.

BossPrefs 2.08b Update

v2.10b is out and solves some reported issues:

  • The 2.0.8b new EDGE method worked great for about 1/2 the people and not at all for the other 1/2. I have added a config option to decide which method to use. It defaults to new.
  • Reverted the way the 5 restricted apps and bossprefs get hidden to the older method where they become unhidden on updates. The 5 restricted apps did not work when launched from another app or system protocol like HTML page call. And double tap home for bossprefs was broken when it was hidden. This should work now. On every update, bossprefs will be unhidden, however. Sorry, no fix to this.
  • Added IP address to 3g line and fixed edge/3g IP address issue. In 2.0 the network device is renamed.

BossPrefs 2.08b Update

This update is a small bugfix:

  • New algorithm to toggle EDGE without resetting the Comm Center. This makes the EDGE toggle nice and fast.
  • Fixed a bug on adding icons to the dock. Some would crash such as Settings icon. This only occurred when the plist was binary.

BossPrefs is updated to v2.0.6b

BossPrefs is updated today to v2.0.6b for firmware 2.0 only. This version adds some new features for hiding icons. This paves the way for Categories which BossPrefs developer plans to implement soon. Here are the formal changes:

  • Added missing file needed to detect running state of custom services.
  • Redid hidden icons GUI.
  • Added ability to hide appstore apps now.
  • Redid how icons are hidden. 2.0’s restrictions mechanism is used now to hide icons. This means that hidden icons no longer show up again on an upgrade of a package. The downside is, if you ever disable restrictions in the settings menu, (or enable it then disable it) all your icons will be visible again and you will have to hide them again. Note you should update poof (if you installed this) also. The two apps must be in sync if both used or hidden icons from one may not be able to be unhidden from the other.

Mail app crashing on 2.0? There is a solution.

Is your mail crashing on 2.0 firmware?

This is generally caused after syncing your backup. This has nothing to do with jailbreaking or not. However, the fix for it is simple and is part of a jailbreak. The issue is that after syncing your backup, your mail folder is owned by root and your mail app running as user mobile does not have permissions to access it. You can fix it in SSH. But I also added a button in BossPrefs to solve it.

Step 1:Jailbreak your device

Step 2: Install BossPrefs from Cydia

Step 3: Tap “more”

Step 4: Tap “Fix User Dir Permissions”

Step 5: Sometimes, not always, you will need to load settings and reenter your mail passwords.

BossPrefs for 2.0 firmware

BossPrefs is a very popular allpication. Now there is BossPrefs v2.0.2a that works with 2.0 fimware. It can be installed via Cydia Installer.

This is the first working version for 2.0 devices. There will be some issues but the major stuff should work. The airplane / phone toggles are not implemented, the add plugin GUI is not implemented, and there may be some other minor issues. The bulk of it works. Update will be very soon, but we can use this version right now.

Couple words and screenshots for those, who are not familiar what this application is for:

Now users can relax and access music, e-mail and web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location."

AT&T provides an online tool to find a Wi-Fi spot near you.

This is about Wi-Fi spots in the US. AT&T has access (company-owned, branded and roaming) to over 70,000 Wi-Fi hotsport in 89 countries and 389 airports.

Update:

Unfortunately, everyone got too excited over nothing - the Wi-Fi is still not available, and the “document” was a mistake. Here is an email from one of their spokespeople:

  • We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone. The webpage was posted in error and is being removed. Wi-Fi is a real differentiator for AT&T and it is our intention to make it available to as many customers as possible, but we have no announcement at this time.

iPhone Configuration Utility

iPhone Configuration Utility lets you create configuration profiles for your devices. There are two versions of iPhone Configuration Utility—one is a Mac OS X application and the otheris a web-based version for Mac OS X or Windows. Application-based looks a bit different, has more functionality, but web-based could be used on windows platform.

After installation of Web utility open a web browser and go to: http://localhost:3000. Log in with the user name admin and the password admin. You're all set. Create profiles and distribute them by email or web.

There are several tabs here:
