Apple Buys an Israeli Firm that Created the Kinect's 3D Sensor

Latest rumors prove that Apple wants to buy an Israeli company called PrimeSense, which once worked on a camera technology now used in XBox 360’s Kinect sensor. The sum of acquisition, according to Calcalist, is $280 million. Moreover, the insiders claim that both sides have nearly reached an agreement.

As to PrimeSense, this is the firm that works mostly on chips for motion sensing, 3D scanning systems and suchlike stuff. It’s a successful vendor, I must say. Apart from Microsoft, such companies as Matterport and iRobot are currently using its sensors for creating full-color 3D models of indoor spaces as well as for navigating through those spaces. You might ask - why would Apple need this developer? Well, in fact, there’re many ways to use it.

After the purchase, PrimeSense can possibly start working on a so-called ‘indoor GPS’ technology, created by WiFiSlam - an outfit, which company from Cupertino purchased this year in March.

PrimeSense is actually not the first Israeli firm bought by Apple. In 2011 the tech giant purchased Anobit - local flash memory component manufacturer - for amazing $400 million. Since that time, two research centres were built in Ra'anana and Haifa to develop and test new Apple products.
