iPhone App Store vs the Android Marketplace
Medialets have put together a comparison of the iPhone App Store and the Android Marketplace after the first 24 hours. There is nothing really Earth-shattering in the data, but it does provide some insight into the similarities between iPhone and G1 users. Basically, it illustrates that both parties are interested in the same sorts of apps, given the fact that the distributions are fairly similar.

The key here is simple: "Taking baby steps is better than taking no steps at all!" We plan on writing 31 iPhone applications in the next 31 days. We will publish both the executable and the source code for each application. Our goal is for each of these applications to be useful, interesting, and straight-forward. iPhone powered notebook
points us to this intriguing company: . It looks like they’re intending on developing a low-cost sort of Netbook, but with a difference — it will be powered by the iPhone. The idea is you plug your iPhone into the bottom and it not only becomes the touchpad for the Netbook, it also powers the thing entirely, the rest of the hardware is simply a keyboard, screen, and a few other bits to make it all run.
The idea is nice but very far from being implemented.

an unknown error 13014
Several users have problems syncing their iPhones after updating to . The most common error message is “an unknown error 13014.”
As one reader writes:
“I just downloaded and installed iTunes 8.0.1 on my iMac running 10.5.5, and synced my non-3G iPhone. I immediately received an error message stating that “The phone ‘[my iPhone's name]‘ cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (13014). Thinking I’d probably be able to fix it by resetting the phone, I did so.
Now, 15 minutes into the reset, the phone is syncing nicely with no major issues, except that I’m still getting prompted that it can’t be synced about every 15 seconds or so. It’s even kind enough to queue up the errors so that if I ignore them for a few minutes I can go back and just click ‘OK’ half a dozen times and then go back to whatever I was working on. No idea of the cause, outside of the iTunes upgrade.”
Users are reporting similar issues with the iPod touch.
In some cases, simply restarting the host computer and restarting the iPhone can resolve this issue. In other cases, this procedure is unsuccessful.
The other workaround is to reinstall iTunes. If this doesn't help, uninstall it and install iTunes version 8.0.

Connect desktop or notebook to internet through iPhone 3G
Many iPhone 3G users would like to use internet on a desktop or notebook through their phone. There were several solutions: iPhoneModem, NetShare, 3Proxy.. they all used SSH and SOCKS proxy. One of the working ones was described here .
Couple days ago PdaNet (fullname is PdaNet WiFi Router) was ported to iPhone. Now our life is much much easier.
iPhone 3G unlocked in Hong Kong
Apple is now selling its iPhone 3G unlocked via its on-line Apple Store in Hong Kong. The 8GB model is HK$5,500 (about US$694) and 16GB is HK$6,200 (about $797). It is available since July 11th with a local Hutchison Telecommunications contract, but this is the first time that Apple has sold its device unlocked in Hong Kong.
"iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."
Unfortunately for the 1 billion mainland Chinese, the terms and conditions limit sales to those in Hong Kong only.. But the gray market usually doesn't care about t&c's.
Apple’s iPhone signal strength is fake?
Firmware version 2.1. It is supposed to display “more accurate” signal strength. Well... it appears that “more accurate” may mean “unreasonably generous.”
Users can actually see the results of iPhones dB meter. Dial *3001#12345#* then press “Call”. A dB reading below 50 generally indicates good strength.
Here's what I've got:
iPhone Atlas reader Michael did some testing, and found that widely varying dB readings resulted in the same five-bar signal indicator on his iPhone. He writes:
Block ads in Safari browser
Jamesisbored published a guide, that shows how to block ads, that show up in Safari browser during web surfing.
MobileSafari has one major drawback. Up until now, there was no way to block ads. Ads increase the load time of a webpage, and especially on EDGE cause the internet to crawl. Blocking them will give you a lot of extra speed. This is one of the simplest hacks available for your iPhone. You will need to be Jailbroken and have the 2.0 Update, or later.
- Connect to your iPhone through SSH, iPhoneBrowser, or some other tool.
- Navigate to /etc/.
- Now download replacement hosts file. Replace iPhone's file with this one.
- Restart your iPhone!
This hack has been tested and confirmed to be working on the iPhone 2.1 Update.
New iPod touch internals
The folks at iFixIt received a brand new iPod Touch, which they disassembled right away.
Both the touch's 3.5-inch LCD display as well as its Lithium-ion polymer battery are held in place with strips of double-sided tape. The WiFi antenna and circuitry, which are located at the top of the unit, are connected to the main logic board by wide orange cable that were designed to prevent external noise from interfering with the digital signals as they travel along the device, iFixIt says.
The specialty online reseller, which offers replacement parts for Macs and iPods, was particularly excited by its discovery of an unpublicized Broadcom BCM4325 Bluetooth chip within the device. The particular chipset supports BT2.1+EDR, and is necessary for the touch's built-in support of Nike+ iPod technology. It's unclear, however, whether the chip supports A2DP, which would pave the way for Apple and third-party developers to introduce stereo headphones for the player.
iFixIt also discovered brown rectangular component centered about three quarters of the way down the touch's logic board, which is suspected to be the device's speaker. Other discoveries include a 3.7 V Lithium-ion polymer battery with part number 616-0404, NAND flash memory from Micron with part number 29F64G08TAA, and an Apple-branded Samsung-manufactured ARM processor with SDRAM that's similar to the one employed by the iPhone.

XiPhone
Recently a new project has been started, called XiPhone. It will be based on XPWN. So functionality similar to WinPwn and Pwnage will be present (jailbreak, unlock, etc). In addition to that developers plan to include:
- Auto downloading of stock firmware files from apple’s site (no need to hunt for it then select it)
- Wizard based modern GUI (created with .net 2.0), and Vista Style UI.
- Export of firmware settings so users can pass around an XML file which contains a configuration that works for them.
- Auto updates to the XiPhone software.
- Community based wallpapers used for Bootscreen, Restore screen and others
- Enabling / Disabling of options available based on the device you select.
Unfortunately, only Windows platform users will be able to use XiPhone.
