Asian trade publication DigiTimes reports, citing it sources, that Apple is exploring two alternative backlight design for the rumored Retina Display on iPad 3, as the single LED light bar currently used in the iPad 2 doesn’t provide enough brightness for the display.

“With the next-generation iPads expected to adopt LCD panels with resolutions higher than 2048 by 1536, the current single LED light bar designed for the iPad 2 has to be modified in order to maintain or strengthen the brightness of the panels, the sources explained”.

The first of the alternative solutions involves using a single light bar with two LED chips and the second solution allegedly incorporates two LED light bars, one on the right and another on the left side of the display. Apple is said to be more interested in implementing two LED light bar design as suppliers have solved battery consumption and head dissipation issues.
