Today Apple showed off its new lineup of MacBook Pros and unveiled new technology called Thunderbolt. When Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller was explaining what's new in upgraded devices, he also mentioned Thunderbolt:

“The new MacBook Pro brings next generation dual and quad Core processors, high performance graphics, Thunderbolt technology and FaceTime HD to the great design loved by our pro customers. Thunderbolt is a revolutionary new I/O technology that delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second and can support every important I/O standard which is ideal for the new MacBook Pro.”

Thunderbolt I/O technology was developed by Intel in partnership with Apple. It features 2 bi-directional channels that allow to transfer information with a speed up to 10 Gbps each, thus delivering PCI Express directly to any external high performance peripheral, for instance, RAID array, and may support Gigabit Ethernet networks and USB and FireWire consumer devices via adapters.

Thunderbolt technology also supports DisplayPort and can work with existing adapters for VGA, DVI and HDMI displays of high resolution. It is expected to become widely adopted as an innovative standard for high-speed data transfer due to its availability for implementation on devices, cables and systems.

All the new MacBook Pros unveiled today have a Thunderbolt port built-in. Stay tuned to know more about new Apple's notebooks in a few minutes.
