iOS And Android Continue To Dominate The Smartphone Market

Worldwide Smartphone Shipments in Millions of Units

Today research company IDC published a new report for the first quarter of 2013 tracking down shipments of mobile phones by OS.

The report shows that iOS and Android continue to dominate the market with 92,3% of shipments during the quarter. iOS marked its largest 1Q shipment volume with 34.7 million units shipped. iOS’s market share decreased from 23% to 17,3% year over year, while Android increased its market share from 59.2% to 75%.

“Although demand remains strong worldwide, the iOS experience has remained largely the same since the first iPhone debuted in 2007. That appears ready to change as online rumors and speculation predict a massive overhaul of the user interface when iOS 7 debuts”.

The gains by iOS and Android during the last several years have been made at the expense of all other operating systems, but IDC’s numbers show that Windows Phone has more than double its shipments year over year, though its market share remains low at 3.2%.
