4.7-Inch iPhone 6 Front Panel Scratch Test Reveals It Is Not Sapphire [Video]

According to the video posted to YouTube by Marques Brownlee, the front panel of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 seems to be made of the next-generation Gorilla Glass or a kind material with a thin sapphire coating and not entirely of sapphire, as it was reported earlier.

The reason for such a conclusion is the ultimate scratch test conducted by the author of the video. He used two sandpapers made of the materials, which stand below sapphire in the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, garnet and emery, so the alleged display should have passed through the test successfully. Nevertheless, both sandpapers left noticeable scratches on the surface of the 4-7-inch front panel, so we can assume that it is not made of sapphire.

Upon testing, both types of sandpapers were able to scratch the iPhone 6's front panel, but it did show better resistance than the Gorilla Glass display for the iPhone 5s. Notably, the sapphire Touch ID home button on the iPhone 5s did not display any marks after being scratched by the sandpaper.

Looks like the only possible way to find out what material is used to produce the screens for Apple’s iPhone 6 is to wait until the release. Let’s wait.
