According to Apple’s statement, the company has now sold 1.7 million iPhone 4s starting from Saturday, June 26 – the day of the official launch of the device.

Steve Jobs says,

This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.

Come to think of it, it’s almost crazy: 1.7 million with not enough stock to satisfy those who turned up without any reservation, with ordering problems, a rather sluggish advertising campaign and a launch limited to just a couple of countries worldwide.

The iPhone 4 is indeed a something of a miracle.

Professor Gert Frølund Pedersen probably has a new catch-phrase these days – “I told you so”. The expert from Denmark's Aalborg University actually predicted Apple’s signal loss problems 2 weeks before the iPhone 4 was even released! In his interview recorded on June 10^th the Danish professor said that he wasn’t too impressed by Steve Jobs’ claims that the new device would have better reception, and predicted that the contact with flesh would lead to undesirable consequences in the signal quality. Here’s the quote:

The human tissue will in any event have an inhibitory effect on the antenna. Touch means that a larger portion of antenna energy becomes heat and lost.

Research results from Aalborg University have already proven that more than 90% of any antenna signal can be easily blocked by holding it in a certain place, and direct skin contact might only make matters worse. The best solution is to have 2 antennae in different parts of the phone so that when one of them is blocked, the other can still pick up the signal.

The problem of signal loss with the iPhone 4 is still on, and users have begun to address the company itself for more information. Is it a hardware or software problem? What is being done to fix it? Steve Jobs is very laconic about it: yes, the problem is there but this is a “non-issue” and you should just avoid holding it that way.

According to yesterday’s announcement, Apple have sold three million iPads during the first 80 days on the market since the device was launched in the US on the 3^rd of April with Wi-Fi only models. To sell 2 million, it took approximately 60 days, so it can be said with certainty that the sales of the iPad are accelerating.

Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs says that people are loving iPads and it’s becoming part of their lives. The company is working hard to allow more and more people to use this wonderful device, and next month the iPad will be available in 9 more countries: Singapore, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Mexico, Luxembourg, Ireland, Hong Kong, Belgium and Austria. The information on the prices and pre-order for these countries is expected to be revealed soon.

According to the press release, more than 11,000 iPad-specific applications are now available in the App Store.

A wonderful story happened with one WWDC attendee.

One developer of China's popular IM client TenCent got an invite to an Apple's annual conference and made a long trip to San Francisco where he was robbed. As a result he got his iPad smashed and a few signigicant injuries. The story would be sad if this guy didn't go to Apple Store and had his iPad replaced for free after revealing his story. Moreover, when the developer checked his e-mail later, he found a letter from Steve Jobs with a short "Safe travels home" message.

In previous post we talked about new glass cover on iPhone 4. This time our attention was attracted by its new "Retina" display, which became a target of criticism for different industry watchers and rivals.

This Monday Steve Jobs claimed on his keynote that new iPhone’s display has a resolution higher than "the limit of the human retina", which he specified as 300 ppi for 10-12 inches distance between the phone and user's eyes. But display expert and DisplayMate Technologies president Dr. Raymond Soneira is ensured that the distinguishable resolution of the human retina is actually 477 ppi for 12 inches distance. That means the new iPhone's display may be retina display if only it was created to be held at 18 inches distance from the eye.

WWDC keynotes are usually carefully orchestrated. However Steve Jobs faced some network troubles.

Apple attempted to do their demo over Wi-Fi, but as you can see couldn't manage to get things up and running due to overload. So Jobs had to ask everyone in the audience to shut off their Wi-Fi so the show could go on.

As you remember, few weeks ago the police broke into Gizmodo journalist’s home and seized 4 computers, 2 servers and a number of different devices. But it was not allowed to search for information until yesterday because officials had been waiting to determine whether Jason Chen (the journalist) was protected as a journalist or not.
