Google today announced that it has issued an update to Google Earth the companion iPhone and iPod touch application to the company's desktop application offering virtual globe and other geographic information.

Among the biggest changes in Version 2.0 of Google Earth is the ability to view custom maps stored in the "My Maps" section of users' Google Maps accounts:

By logging in directly to your Google Maps account, you can view the same maps that you or others have created, using the My Maps interface.

What's new:

• Take your maps with you wherever you go. View Google Maps created on your desktop computer on your iPhone.
• Visual feedback when you select photos, businesses, and other icons. It's now much easier to browse.
• Improved performance
• Available in many new languages and countries

The app is free and avaliable in AppStore (link).

More and more developers complain about the rejection of their applications in the AppStore. There's a good reason behind all this.

It seems that Apple has created a tool that can automatically review applications and APIs that are used. According to the rules of the SDK, the developers can not use private API. If this initial test is passed examiners begin to manually check the app.

So the advice is quite simple - follow the rules of the SDK.

There is an app for about everything. iMaya is an iPhone application that shows a countdown clock until time X of 2012.

Here is a quick story about this Maya calendar. Maya civilization had several different calendars, the longest one, The Long Count, identifies a date by counting the number of days from the Mayan creation (August 11, 3114 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar or September 6 in the Julian calendar). But instead of using a base-10 (decimal) scheme like Western numbering, the Long Count days were tallied in a modified base-20 scheme. Thus 0.0.0.1.5 is equal to 25, and 0.0.0.2.0 is equal to 40.

The Maya name for a day was k'in. Twenty of these k'ins are known as a winal or uinal. Eighteen winals make one tun. Twenty tuns are known as a k'atun. Twenty k'atuns make a b'ak'tun. Confused? Don't panic. 1 B'ak'tun is about 144,000 days or 394.3 years.

The date December 20, 2012 is simply the last day of the 13th b'ak'tun. And here is the big misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. There is a belief, that this date is the basis for a New Age and for a big cataclysm. For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle. But that is not the end of the Long Count because the 14th through 20th b'ak'tuns are still to come. So we need to wait for another 7 b'ak'tuns (> 2700 years), when this Long Count calendar will end.

The app costs $0.99 and is available in AppStore (link). It requires firmware 3.1.2 and is localized in various languages.

Apple has launched iTunes Preview, a feature that shows what music is available on iTunes from the convenience of your Web browser. iTunes Preview lets anyone browse through the entire iTunes catalog’s worth of music, info, and user reviews for any region.

You can access iTunes Preview in one of two ways, either through iTunes Charts on Apple’s Website or through any link generated from the iTunes Store’s Copy Link feature. Unfortunately, it’s still not possible to listen to music outside of iTunes.

For now, this feature only works with music. Hopefully someday it will be be extended to movies, TV shows and the AppStore.

This is a robot capable of playing Rock Band iPhone application. The setup is pretty much the same as the other robots that play these kinds of games.

Google created a new application called Google Maps Navigator. This is a full and free navigation software supported by advertising. The app will have turn-by-turn navigation, traffic information, POI, voice search, sattelite, 3D and street views. There is only an app for the Android platfom, but an iPhone version will be released soon. Hopefully Apple will not reject it. Let's watch the video:

NASA, the government agency responsible for the space program of the United States of America, has just released its first application for iPhone. Through a simple interface this app allows us to know about all the missions planned.

Volkswagen and Firemint released a new iPhone game called Real Racing GTI. The 59.3MB download offers a Volkswagen branded racing experience with one main track and six 2010 GTI sport hatches. This game is free (AppStore link).

The three game modes include Quick Race, Time Trial, and GTI Cup Championship (across three tracks). Aside from being a great ad for Volkswagen, Real Racing GTI also serves as the Lite version of Firemint's widely acclaimed Real Racing ($6.99, Appstore link).

iPhone application DropBox has just been updated and is now compatible with Firmware 3.0. So a lot more users can install it and enjoy its excellent features.

DropBox is a service that offers 2GB of free web space to store your documents, pictures, videos, music and more. Using the iPhone application you can access this information and view all files. If you have not tried the service, I recommend you to do so.

Jelly Car is an amazing iPhone game. If you like it, surely you'll be glad to know that a new version with many changes is coming soon. There will be ability to change a car, to attach to any surface, to fly with a balloon and much more. The Level Editor will also be updated.

Command & Conquer Red Alert is a well-known game, now it comes to the iPhone platform. According to EA, the game will be available on October 23rd. Watch the Video:

iDriver is an iPhone application to remote control a car, created by the Freie Universität Berlin and powered by Appirion UG. The car is called "Spirit of Berlin", it is a completely autonomous vehicle equipped with various sensors and a drive-by-wire system for unmanned driving.

Dropbox is a very useful and popular application. It has already received 75,000 downloads. However it requires firmware 3.1 due to the usage of some API's for video upload and download.

Good news for anyone who wanted to test the application Dropbox but was stopped by the firmware compatibility. A new version compatible with 3.0 will be released soon. It has already been sent to Apple and will be available in a few days. We will keep you informed.
