White iPhone 4s shows up in internal AT&T system

Engadget published a screenshot that is claimed to be an AT&T's internal system listing a white iPhone 4S.

A helpful tipster sent us this tasty morsel, from AT&T's internal system, listing the "iPhone 4s White" beneath a handful of already familiar Apple handsets. Could it be? Is Cupertino actually planning on bringing a white version of its next iPhone out at launch?

Real or not - noone knows, we just have to wait and see it announced by Apple in October.

Sprint to Launch iPhone 5 with Unlimited Data Next Month

sprint_logo

Bloomberg confirms information previously reported by The Wall Street Journal that Sprint will indeed begin offering the iPhone 5 next month with unlimited data plans for the device. Sprint reportedly will launch the iPhone 5 in mid-October.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) will offer Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone next month with unlimited data service plans to distinguish itself from rivals AT&T Inc. (T) and Verizon Wireless, according to people familiar with the matter.

Sprint, the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, plans to begin selling the device in mid-October under a deal with Apple for the next model, the iPhone 5, said the people, who wouldn’t be identified because the plans aren’t public. Becoming the country’s only operator to offer the device with unlimited data service for a flat fee may help Sprint draw customers from AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which already carry the phone, they said.

Dual-Mode iPhone 5 Shows Up in App Developer Logs

verizon_iphone_mdm

At least one developer reportedly has found evidences confirming fact that Apple is testing the dual-mode iPhone 5, supporting both GSM and CDMA in one phone, against current App Store apps.

The logs show that the app has been briefly tested by a handful of people using what is almost certainly an iPhone 5, evidently running iOS 5, sporting two distinct sets of mobile network codes (MNC) / mobile country codes (MCC). Those codes can be used to uniquely identify mobile carriers.

Sure enough, some registrations for the app – which the developer also asked not to be named – were logged from a new Apple device, using the MNC/MCC codes from both Verizon and AT&T.

Apple Testing LTE in iOS 5 and Hiring More LTE Engineers

lte

Early last week there appeared some rumors that Apple has been testing a 4G LTE-enabled iPhone with carriers. In an "internal iOS test build" was found a property list file (.plist) for LTE. This might mean that Apple was already testing LTE hardware. This LTE.plist file, however, was found only in some of the builds (GSM iPhone 4, CDMA iPad 2) and it was related to Apple's internal "Fieldtest" application.

LTE is the term the next generation wireless broadband network that is currently being deployed by both Verizon and AT&T. Data speeds for LTE should be significantly faster than the iPhone's existing 3G network.

Other rumors suggest that it is unlikely that Apple will make the jump to LTE so early with the iPhone 5, because, as Apple's Tim Cook said, the first generation of LTE chipsets forced a lot of design compromises, and Apple was unwilling to make those compromises. Such compromises could include very short battery life for mobile phones.  But, as far as we know, AT&T had installed 4G LTE equipment in a major Apple retail store and Apple had put out a job listing for field test engineers with expertise in LTE.

Additionally, the VP communicated the following to a group of managers: ‘Expect things to get really, really busy in the next 35-50 days, so prepare your teams accordingly’.

Apple's carrier partners, however, frequently don’t know Apple's exact launch plans. But AT&T is one of Apple's closer partners.

AT&T included iPhone In Its Insurance Policy

IMGP6572

AT&T included Apple’s iPhone (all models) to their insurance program for mobile devices. Starting on July 17 customers can stay calm paying just five dollars per month. With this coverage not only your iPhone but also your other wireless investments on the AT&T network will be protected from loss, theft, electrical failure and accidental damage that standard Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover.

If your handset is stolen, damaged or lost, you will have the right to replace you handset with the deductible ranging from $50 to $125 per claim providing that you file no more than two claims for twelve consecutive months. Here is a citation from AT&T’s mobile insurance page:

Effective July 17, 2011, the Apple iPhone (all models) will be eligible for coverage with the AT&T Mobile Insurance program (formerly Wireless Phone Insurance). Enrollment restrictions apply. Customers can only enroll within 30 days of a new activation or upgrade, prior activations or upgrades outside of 30 days are not eligible.

Also customers can consider an option of replacing AT&T’s insurance with Apple’s insurance plan as it is known that Apple replaces accidentally broken and out-of-warranty iPhones for a fixed $199 repair fee, but the warranty doesn’t cover theft or loss. Also you should know that there are some cases that neither company covers, for example, liquid damage.

Apple will offer free iPhone 3GS with 2-year mobile contract

poll

Mike Abramsky, Analyst at RBC Capital Markets, expects that Apple might offer the iPhone 3GS for free with 2-year contract after the iPhone 5 launch; that step will obviously attract mid-market buyers.

"While a $49 iPhone is already available (AT&T), psychologically a $0 iPhone provides a compelling offer," Abramsky wrote in a note to investors. "Proprietary survey data... suggests 14% are very/somewhat likely to buy the iPhone 3GS for free with 2-year contract, exceeding buying interest for the iPad (13%) and original iPhone (9%)."

Abramsky suggest that free iPhone 3GS will increase iPhone numbers to more than 150 million smartphones. That will be unusual for Apple, because the company always discontinues its two-year-old smartphones. For example, after launch of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, first released in 2009, was dropped to $99, and the iPhone 3G was discontinued. Noteworthy to say that despite the fact that the iPhone 3GS was first released in 2009, it will be compatible with the iOS 5.

iPhone turns 4 years old today. Happy Birthday iPhone!

happy-birthday

On January 9th 2007 Steve Jobs presented the first ever Apple iPhone to the world. The Apple CEO started off the epic keynote by saying the famous lines, "This is a day, I've been looking forward to for 2 and a half years. Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything…".

The iPhone launched on June 29, 2007. In its 4 years of existence, the device has changed a lot, starting from iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS and now it is iPhone 4. All these devices were truly revolutionary.

2011 has been an interesting year for the iPhone. In February Apple introduced the Verizon iPhone, ending AT&T 3 year exclusiveness in the US. In April we finally saw the white iPhone 4.

Apple sold close to 20 million iPhones last quarter and the rate is still quite amazing. The company is expected to sell 100 million units of its next-generation iPhone that will be probably released this fall.

Apple indeed "reinvented the phone". The iPhone completely redefined how a "smartphone" should look and act.
